For many patients, deciding between the different breast procedures available can feel overwhelming. Each option addresses a different concern, and the right choice is rarely obvious from the outside. At McKeown Medical Glasgowbreast surgery is led by Dr Kavita Sharma, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon whose approach centres on structured clinical assessment rather than a fixed preference for one breast procedure over another.

Understanding the Main Breast Procedures

Four main breast procedures are offered at McKeown Medical Glasgow, each designed to address a specific concern. Breast enlargement adds volume where natural breast tissue is smaller than the patient would like. Breast uplift restores position and shape without significantly changing size. Breast reduction addresses excess volume and its associated physical or aesthetic effects. Gynaecomastia surgery treats enlargement of male breast tissue.

Breast Enlargement

Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation with silicone or breast augmentation with fat transfer, is one of the most commonly requested breast procedures worldwide. It suits patients whose natural breast volume is smaller than they would like, whether that reflects genetic predisposition, changes following pregnancy and breastfeeding, or the effects of significant weight loss.

The important decision is which approach best fits the patient’s existing breast and chest anatomy. Where implants are used, size, shape, profile, and placement are determined by individual chest measurements and tissue characteristics rather than a fixed template.

Breast Uplift

Breast uplift, also known as mastopexy, is a breast procedure that addresses the position and shape of the breast without significantly changing its volume. It suits patients whose breasts have descended over time due to ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations, and who want to restore a firmer, more elevated shape.

The procedure repositions the breast tissue and, where appropriate, removes excess skin to achieve a supported and refined contour. For some patients, uplift is combined with a small volume adjustment through implant placement, which is discussed openly during consultation.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a smaller, lighter, and more proportionate breast shape. Patients often seek this procedure not only for aesthetic reasons but also because significantly larger breasts can cause back, neck, and shoulder discomfort, skin irritation, and difficulty with exercise or finding well-fitting clothing.

The procedure reshapes the breast at the same time as reducing its volume, which is why the aesthetic outcome is typically as important as the physical relief the surgery provides.

Gynaecomastia Surgery

Gynaecomastia is the medical term for enlargement of male breast tissue. It affects a significant proportion of men at some point, and while it is often benign, it can cause considerable distress. This breast procedure removes excess glandular tissue and, where appropriate, associated fat to restore a flatter and more masculine chest contour.

For some patients, the concern is primarily glandular and requires surgical excision. For others, the issue is fatty and responds well to advanced liposuction techniques alone, including Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction where appropriate. Many patients present with a combination, and the treatment plan reflects the balance in each individual case.

Matching the Procedure to the Concern

Because each breast procedure addresses a different concern, the right choice depends on which factor is dominant in your individual case. The comparison below sets out how each option fits which patient profile.

Primary Concern Most Appropriate Breast Procedure
Smaller natural volume than desired Breast enlargement
Breast position or shape has descended over time Breast uplift
Volume loss combined with descent Combined enlargement and uplift
Excess volume causing physical discomfort or disproportion Breast reduction
Enlargement of male breast tissue Gynaecomastia surgery
Significant asymmetry between breasts Combined approach tailored to each side

What Patients Often Come In Expecting Versus What They Actually Need

One of the most common things we see in consultation is that the procedure a patient thinks they need is not necessarily the one that best addresses their anatomy. Patients often arrive expecting enlargement when what they have perceived as volume loss is actually a change in breast position, which is better addressed by uplift. Others arrive expecting reduction alone when the more balanced result would come from a reduction that also reshapes and lifts the breast. Some arrive expecting a single-sided procedure and leave understanding that addressing both breasts will deliver a more symmetrical outcome.

None of these is a wrong starting point. The consultation exists to work out what your anatomy actually supports and what will deliver the result you are looking for, which is not always the procedure you arrived expecting.

How the Right Procedure Is Chosen at McKeown Medical

Every breast procedure consultation at McKeown Medical Glasgow begins with a structured assessment rather than a treatment recommendation. Dr Kavita Sharma discusses what has prompted you to consider surgery, examines your breast anatomy in detail, reviews any relevant medical history, and discusses realistic expectations openly.

The recommendation that follows is based on what your anatomy and goals actually support. Recommending no surgery, or a different approach entirely, is part of medically led practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which breast procedure is right for me?

The right breast procedure is determined by a structured clinical consultation that assesses breast anatomy, skin quality, symmetry, and personal goals. What can be said in advance is that if your concern is volume, enlargement may suit you; if your concern is position, uplift may suit you; and if your concern is size and discomfort, reduction may suit you. The consultation clarifies which applies.

What is the recovery time for breast surgery?

Recovery times vary by procedure. Downtime is typically around one week, with most patients back to normal activities within a couple of weeks. It can take up to six weeks before returning to more strenuous exercise. The final shape continues to settle over the weeks that follow, and follow-up reviews are scheduled at six and twelve weeks.

Can more than one breast procedure be combined?

Yes. It is not uncommon for patients to combine, for example, an uplift with a small enlargement, or a reduction with reshaping. Whether combining procedures is appropriate depends on individual anatomy and is discussed openly during consultation.

What anaesthetic is used for breast surgery?

At McKeown Medical Glasgow, breast surgery is performed under deep sedation with local anaesthetic. Your surgeon will explain exactly what this involves as part of the consultation and pre-operative planning.

Will I need to stop any medication before surgery?

Some medications, particularly blood-thinning ones, may need to be adjusted or paused around the time of surgery. Full guidance is provided during consultation based on your individual medical history.

Some more Quantum Lift magic!

This patient is just 24 hours after her Quantum lift with fat redistribution. As part of the procedure we sometimes take some of excess fat that’s been removed from the neck and jowls and replace it along the chin and jaw to create more definition.

Although she’s still bruised and swollen, I think we can all already see where this result is heading.

The patient is delighted! What do you think?
Dr Rhona is back!

We’re delighted to share that Dr Rhona Cameron will be returning to clinic at the beginning of September following her maternity leave and her diary is now open for appointments!

We know many of you have been looking forward to seeing Rhona again, and we’re so pleased to welcome her back!

Once again, the combination treatment wins the day!

This patient came to us hating her neck and jowls, but she would not consider anything invasive. Treating the neck is always a challenge especially with non-invasive treatments only.

For this patient we first of all reduced the fat under the chin using CoolSculpting, then we did some hyaluronic acid under the mandible to define the jaw and finally we did some Sofwave to tighten the skin.

The patient is over the moon with her results. What do you think?
I genuinely think the Quantum Lift is changing what is possible for patients who want to improve their jawline and neck, but do not want to undergo facelift surgery.

I have used earlier generations of skin-tightening technology and, honestly, I was often underwhelmed by the results. This is different.

By combining precise power-assisted liposuction, targeted treatment of the neck muscle where needed, and QuantumRF skin tightening, we can address the three things that most commonly age the lower face and neck: muscle, fat and skin.

This patient is shown just 24 hours after treatment. There is still swelling to settle, but the early change in her jawline and neck contour is already clear.

I have also included clips from the procedure for anyone who likes seeing the technical side of what we do.

Would you consider a minimally invasive alternative to facelift surgery for your jawline or neck, or would you rather go straight to surgery?
