Inverted nipples

Inverted nipple correction is a common surgery that many women choose if they are bothered by the appearance of inverted or flat nipples. Not everyone’s nipples are the same, as it is quite common to find that women have either flat or inverted nipples. They do not cause any physiological problems, although some women find it embarrassing and would prefer to have more projected nipples.

They do not cause any physiological problems, although some women find it embarrassing and would prefer to have more projected nipples.

Treating inverted nipples

Inverted nipples are usually a completely benign condition, although one that can cause some women embarrassment because of their appearance. Inverted nipples usually happen at the time of puberty, when the milk glands that form in the developing breast are a little short. It can affect one or both sides.

If, however, you have just recently developed an inverted nipple, you should see your doctor as an emergency to have this investigated.

Long-standing inverted nipples, however, can usually be corrected by means of a simple procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. This means the doctor begins by injecting numbing medicine around the nipple, before making some small incisions to rearrange the tissues under the nipple to create a more projected appearance to the nipple.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The procedure is usually able to achieve a more normal projection to the nipple.

Which anaesthetic is used?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, which means you are awake throughout with some numbing injections to make the procedure more comfortable.

What's the downtime?

You will need to take it easy for a couple of weeks following your inverted nipple procedure, although you should still be able to carry out non-manual work. You should avoid strenuous activities, such as going to the gym, for six weeks following treatment.

When will I see results?

You will be able to see immediately that the nipple projection has been restored. The contour of the nipple will continue to evolve over the next few months as the scar tissue matures, and the nipple may flatten slightly as this happens, although it should still end up considerably better than where it was before the procedure.
