Overlooked and often neglected, the neck is frequently forgotten about in our pursuit to refresh our appearance. However, a smooth, swan-like neck is important in creating a harmonious-looking aesthetic: not simply because it sits in such close proximity to the face – but because it is comprised of some powerful muscles, which have a significant impact on the “lower third” – in particular, the mouth and the jowls.
The main muscle in the neck is the platysma, which is attached to the corners of the mouth. It is a “depressor” muscle, in that it pulls downwards, and this is what enables us to produce certain facial expressions. However, over time, it can also contribute to a sagging lower face, by constantly pulling the mouth and jowls down – resulting in a saddened appearance and a slack looking jawline. Muscle relaxing injections such as Botox® can therefore be extremely helpful at softening this activity, and counteracting a resting “negative” facial expression.
The neck is also unique in that its skin does not contain the myriad sebaceous glands that the face does – and this can contribute to dryness and dehydration. Meanwhile, constant movement and staring down at our phones or devices exacerbates the problem, resulting in wrinkles and so-called “necklace lines”. Though bothersome, these lines can be effectively softened with energy-based treatments: such as Fractional Skin Resurfacing or Morpheus8. Our expert doctor-led team will be happy to advise which approach is best-suited to you.
