Discover the difference between brachioplasty and non-surgical skin tightening treatments for bingo wings, including what causes loose arm skin and which options may be most effective.

The upper arms are one of the most common areas patients ask me about, often quietly.
You may notice gradual softening, a loss of firmness, or skin that no longer feels as tight or defined as it once did. For many, this happens despite maintaining a healthy weight and active lifestyle.
This is what is commonly referred to as “bingo wings”.
It is important to understand that this is not a failure of discipline. It is a natural combination of skin changes, fat distribution, and time. The key is identifying which of these factors is dominant and choosing the right solution.
In some cases, this can be addressed non-surgically. In others, an Arm Lift offers the most effective and predictable outcome.
In clinical terms, there are three primary contributors to changes in the upper arms:
What makes the upper arm particularly challenging is that these factors tend to occur together. This is why patients often feel frustrated, as lifestyle measures alone rarely restore the contour.
Understanding this is crucial. Treating the wrong problem leads to disappointing results, whereas selecting the correct approach, whether non-surgical or an Arm Lift, leads to meaningful change.
An Arm Lift is a surgical procedure designed to restore shape and definition to the upper arm.
It involves removing excess skin and refining the contour to create a smoother, more proportionate silhouette. The goal is not simply to reduce size, but to achieve balance and natural-looking definition.
You may also hear this referred to as brachioplasty or arm lift brachioplasty. While the terminology varies, the principle is the same: addressing excess skin that cannot be corrected through non-surgical treatments.
For the right patient, an Arm Lift can be transformative, both physically and in terms of confidence.
The most suitable patients for an Arm Lift are those with moderate to significant skin laxity that does not respond to non-surgical treatments. This often presents as loose or hanging skin along the upper arm, particularly when the arm is relaxed, and a sense that the arms no longer feel proportionate to the rest of the body.
This is especially common following weight loss, although it is equally a natural part of ageing. In these cases, an Arm Lift provides a level of correction that cannot be achieved through skin tightening or fat reduction alone.
An Arm Lift is a carefully planned procedure that focuses on reshaping the arm with precision.
Excess skin is removed from the inner aspect of the arm, and where appropriate, underlying fat is refined to enhance the final contour. The aim is always to create a smooth, natural line from the shoulder to the elbow.
All procedures are carried out using advanced techniques, with deep sedation to ensure patient comfort without the need for general anaesthesia.
It is important to be clear that an Arm Lift does involve a scar. However, this is positioned discreetly along the inner arm and typically settles well over time. This is something I discuss openly during consultation, so you can make a fully informed decision.
Recovery following an Arm Lift is generally well tolerated, although there is a period of adjustment as the body heals.
Most patients experience some swelling and bruising initially, followed by a gradual return to normal activities over the following weeks. Light daily activities can usually be resumed quite quickly, with more strenuous exercise introduced in a staged way.
The results of an Arm Lift continue to refine over time, with improvements becoming more apparent as healing progresses. Importantly, the outcome is long-lasting and provides a sustained improvement in contour.
One of the most important aspects of my role is advising when surgery is not required.
Not all patients with bingo wings need an Arm Lift. In many cases, particularly where concerns are identified early, non-surgical treatments can deliver excellent results.
If the primary concern is localised fat, CoolSculpting can be highly effective. It works by freezing fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over time.
This can create a slimmer, more refined appearance. You can learn more about our CoolSculpting treatments and how they are used to refine areas such as the upper arms.
Where skin quality is the main issue, energy-based treatments can stimulate collagen and improve firmness.
Technologies such as BBL SkinTyte and Sofwave deliver targeted energy into the skin, encouraging gradual tightening and remodelling.
You can explore our skin tightening treatments to understand which approach may be most suitable.
These treatments are particularly effective for mild to moderate laxity, or as a preventative approach.
In some cases, injectable treatments can improve hydration and elasticity, contributing to a smoother appearance. While subtle, these treatments can complement other approaches and delay the need for an Arm Lift.
Choosing between an Arm Lift and non-surgical treatment is not about preference, but suitability.
If excess fat is the main issue, non-surgical fat reduction may be appropriate. If skin laxity is mild, tightening treatments may deliver improvement. However, where there is significant loose skin, an Arm Lift is often the only option that will achieve a meaningful result.
If you are unsure which approach is right for you, this is something we explore in detail during consultation, where we can assess your anatomy and guide you towards the most appropriate option.
For patients considering a surgical option, you can read more about our approach to Arm Lift procedures and what this involves in practice.
Yes, an Arm Lift does involve a scar along the inner arm. However, it is carefully positioned and typically fades well over time.
A well-executed Arm Lift should look entirely natural. The aim is always to restore proportion, not to create an artificial appearance.
No. Many patients can achieve excellent results without an Arm Lift, particularly when concerns are addressed early and treated appropriately.
At McKeown Medical, our approach is centred around achieving results that feel balanced, natural, and appropriate for you.
We assess the underlying causes of your concern and design a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs. For some patients, that will involve an Arm Lift, while for others, a non-surgical approach will be more appropriate.
Our role is to guide you towards the option that will deliver the most effective result, while maintaining a natural and proportionate outcome.
If you are considering treatment for your upper arms, the first step is a detailed consultation. This allows us to assess your concerns properly, explain your options clearly, and design a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
You can begin your journey by completing our online consultation form or requesting a callback from our team.

Let`s talk about Mounjaro / Ozempic face!
It feels like everyone is on weight loss drugs right now, and they`re incredible for transforming bodies and health, but rapid weight loss has a real impact on the face.
This lovely patient lost an incredible 6 stones in just twelve months on Mounjaro and loved the results, but felt the life had been sucked out of her face. She naturally had a fuller, more plump face that looked youthful but the rapid weight loss diminished that.
There`s a lot of conversation right now about the best way of tackling it aesthetically and there are different options available. However, since loss of volume is the key driver of the changes, restoring the volume needs to be a central component of how we treat it - which is exactly what we did here.
This is the patient a couple of weeks after 10mls of HA filler in the mid and lower face. She is over the moon that she now has the body and health profile she wanted, but got her face back too!
The best of both worlds. What do you think?
Here’s another gorgeous upper blepharoplasty result from our phenomenal surgeon, @bramhallplasticsurgery.
This patient is 62 years old and came to us for upper eyelid surgery just 2.5 months ago. Russell performed the procedure while she was awake with just a few numbing injections. Here at the clinic we can offer facial surgery with local anaesthetic for those who want to remain awake, or with deep sedation for anyone who’d prefer to sleep throughout (without the downsides of general anaesthetic!)
Thank you to this patient for allowing us to share her fabulous result - her scars are already settling beautifully and will continue to fade over the next 12 months.

Our resident superstar breast surgery expert Dr Kavita was asked to talk about trends in breast surgery on BBC Radio Scotland today. This was Kavita’s first ever live interview and we thought she nailed it!

And this is why combination treatments always win!
This lovely patient is in her 50s and was noticing all of the classic signs of ageing. She was starting to see some jowls forming, the neck was becoming more saggy and she felt she was looking tired.
At this stage in the ageing process it is not one thing that is responsible for causing the tired expression, its a combination of changes that are working together which is why we need a combination of treatments to target it effectively.
We did some sofwave treatment first to tighten the skin on the face and neck. Sofwave is very effective at tightening the skin, but remember: the skin is only the outer layer of the face, so we supported the treatment with some volume replacement in the deeper layers.
I decided to post her selfie style before and afters as well as her clinical pictures so you can see how it looks in real life, as well as the clinical up-close detail. The patient is over the moon with her results.

Here is another beautifully balanced deep plane face and neck lift by the skilful @bramhallplasticsurgery.
The deep plane technique, as the name suggests, works at a deeper level, repositioning the underlying structures of the face and neck rather than simply tightening the skin. By addressing the deeper tissues, we can restore more natural proportions, refine the jawline, and create a smoother, more defined contour beneath the chin - especially when the patient moves or bends their neck forward.
To achieve this impressive improvement in the neck, even in flexion, Russell reduced the deep fat (from under the muscle), trimmed and shaped the salivary glands and reconstructed the muscles of the neck to create a rejuvenated result. This is a much more sophisticated procedure compared with a standard face and neck lift.
At just 2 months post-op, her result is already beautifully balanced. The jawline is sharper, the neck more sculpted, and everything sits in harmony with the rest of her features. Scars are settling well and will continue to soften over time.
She may choose to refine things further with laser resurfacing for skin quality and subtle volume restoration in the mid-face, but even at this stage, the transformation speaks for itself.
Thank you to our patient for allowing us to share her journey.

Thank you to this lovely patient for allowing us to share her beautiful result from the talented @bramhallplasticsurgery.
This patient is just 2.5 months after upper eyelid surgery, and already looking incredibly fresh and natural. The scars are settling very well and will continue to soften over the coming months.
The incisions are carefully placed within the natural eyelid crease, making them very difficult to see once healed. Excess skin has been removed to open up the eye area, while maintaining a soft, natural appearance.
A small amount of muscle was reduced at the outer part of the eyelid to address hooding, without affecting the central area. This helps preserve a youthful fullness above the eye. There has also been a conservative reduction of the lateral brow fat to further refine the contour. This highly tailored, bespoke approach to surgery is the attention to detail that lies at the heart of our clinic’s approach and philosophy.
As with many patients, her anatomy meant these changes developed earlier than expected. In the right cases, surgery at a younger age can deliver a subtle but very impactful improvement.

Happy Easter from our excited little bunnies 🐣🐰
Thank you to our lovely patient for allowing us to share these photos.
This is just 4 weeks after her first session (of three) with Juläine and we’re already starting to see a soft return of fullness and improvement in skin quality.
Juläine is not a traditional filler. It works by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, gradually restoring structure, firmness and elasticity from within.
This is just the beginning. As collagen continues to rebuild over the coming weeks and months, results will become more noticeable with improved support, smoother contours and a natural, refreshed appearance.
The patient is delighted with her progress so far. What do you think?
And this is why HA fillers have never gone out of fashion in our practice!
This lovely patient had all the classic signs of volume loss in her face and there is no other non-surgical treatment that can address this quite as quickly, effectively and non-invasively as HA filler. Of course, it needs to be carefully and sensitively applied.
This patient had a total of 10mls of HA as well as some wrinkle relaxing on the upper face. She is delighted with her restoration. What do you think?
