Thinning lips, or an asymmetric lip line, are most often the result of genetics; however, as we age we also lose natural volume in this area – which can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles around the mouth, while contributing to slackening of the lower-face. As a result of popular culture, the influence of celebrities and even social media, lip augmentation has increased dramatically; however lip volumisation should still be carefully considered, and performed in a way that complements your facial features.

The gold-standard treatment for adding volume to thinning lips is the use of dermal filler. Many women are nervous about lip filler, for fear that the end result may look overly conspicuous or inflate the lips to extreme proportions. However, at McKeown Medical, we advocate only the most subtle lip enhancement and believe that the best treatment should be truly undetectable.

Sometimes when people complain of a lack of volume in their lips it is really the length of their lip that is the problem. Technically the upper lip includes the white skin below the nose too and if this area is too long, no matter how much volume you add to the lips you simply make the area look bulky, without achieving much improvement in the perception of lip fullness. To correct this, an upper lip lift is a minor surgical procedure involving a scar under the nostrils.
Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and the results you are looking to achieve.
Finding the right treatment for you is the most important factor in ensuring that you are on the correct path to achieve the results you desire. Our pre-consultation enquiry helps us to identify your needs and, ultimately, gets you on the right path to achieving your optimal results.
Lines around the lips are one of the most common complaints that women come to us with. These can be treated permanently with aggressive resurfacing, although a much less invasive option is to simply restore some volume around the area. Hear how Catherine got on with filler injections around the mouth.
Artistically administered, dermal filler will gently volumise the lips, define their shape, and restore what has been lost with time. In this way, our expert team of injectors produce a result that is discreet, understated, and in keeping with your natural anatomy.
The lip area can be especially sensitive; however, we use lip-specific dermal fillers containing a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort. Applying a topical numbing cream, prior to treatment, can also help to dull the sensation.
The lips are most prone to swelling and the area will feel tender for the next day or so. However this is completely normal and most patients are fit to continue with their day as normal. If bruising does occur, it is easily covered with post-procedure makeup – though this should not be applied until the day following treatment. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.
The volumisation is immediately noticeable; however, this will settle over the coming days. The best results are seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissue and the lips have settled.
