Sagging jawline

Many women who come to see us in the clinic complain of a sagging jawline. When we talk to them, we realise that it’s not just the lack of elasticity and structure that bothers them, it’s that this sagging jawline affects their self-confidence on a deeper level. For some, it makes them dislike their profile or having photographs taken; for others, the absence of definition makes them feel that their face appears weak. Understanding the root cause of a sagging jawline, however, is key to achieving a successful outcome.

What can help?

The most effective non-surgical treatment for a sagging jawline is the use of volume-restoring injections, typically restoring volume in the cheeks, chin, and jawline for the best results. If you have a petite chin as a facial feature, this often looks attractive in youth, but as bone reabsorption kicks in as part of the ageing process, this predisposes you to forming jowls early, and correcting the size and shape of the chin with filler injections will help to improve this considerably.

More Options

The gold standard method of correcting a sagging jawline remains the facelift procedure, and we are the first, and to date only, clinic in Scotland to offer the deep plane facelift technique. The deep plane technique is considered the most technically challenging type of facelift, although it gives the most effective and natural results, which are considerably better than those obtained from more basic standard techniques. The beauty of the deep plane technique is that the jawline and neck hold their shape, even when you bend your head forward.

Patient Testimonials

The jowls are one of the most commonly complained about areas of the face and are often associated with a sagging jawline. For patients who do not wish to undergo surgery, fillers in the cheek, chin, and jawline offer an effective non-surgical solution. Listen to how this approach worked for Lorraine.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

By underpinning the soft tissues of the lower face and supporting suboptimal areas, such as an underdeveloped chin, dermal fillers can effectively correct the appearance of a sagging jawline and restore sharpness and definition to the jawline. In doing so, they also help balance the face, ensuring a harmonious and natural-looking result.

Which anaesthetic is used?

We use dermal fillers, which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort, while the use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for anxious patients.

What's the downtime?

With dermal fillers, the jawline and chin may swell and will feel tender post-procedure, though this has usually settled by the following day. Most patients are ready to resume their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. If bruising occurs, it can be easily covered with makeup,  though this should not be applied until the next day. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.

When will I see results?

Following dermal fillers, the jawline regains a sense of strength and appears sharper, while the chin, though treated, is often imperceptible to anyone other than yourself. The best results, however, are to be seen in two weeks, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissues.
