Chin augmentation

Chin Augmentation in Glasgow

The importance of the chin is often under-appreciated: in fact, for many patients, it is inconsequential in comparison to other features, such as the nose or lips. However, the shape and position of the chin is critical in establishing a sense of harmony within the landscape of the face. By correcting the chin we can not only prevent the signs of ageing, but we can restore strength, balance the features, and support the lower-face.

A chin that sits too far back, or was naturally underdeveloped to begin with, can leave the whole face looking less defined and, over time, contribute to the early formation of jowls. Chin augmentation restores or enhances projection, strengthening the profile and bringing the lower face back into proportion.

Chin Augmentation Treatment Overview

The chin does more for the face than most people realise. Its size and position set the balance of the lower face and the line of the profile, and when it is underdeveloped or has lost bone with age, the whole face can look less defined. Chin augmentation rebuilds projection using dermal filler, restoring support where it is lacking. Because the chin sits at the base of the facial framework, correcting it improves not only the chin itself but the surrounding features.

Choosing Chin Augmentation Treatment

The right approach depends on the degree of correction needed. For most patients, dermal filler restores projection precisely and with minimal downtime, with the amount and placement determining the final result. Because the chin works together with the cheeks, jawline and nose, an assessment looks at the lower face as a whole, so the correction brings the features into balance rather than treating the chin in isolation.

Non-surgical Chin Augmentation Treatments vs. Surgical Chin Augmentation Procedures

At our Glasgow clinic, chin augmentation is carried out using dermal filler. Filler rebuilds projection where the chin is weak or has receded with age, with minimal downtime, which makes it well suited to restoring balance and supporting the lower face. It also allows the result to be shaped precisely during treatment. Where a chin is significantly recessed beyond what filler can achieve, an assessment will discuss whether a surgical opinion is more appropriate.

Chin Augmentation Related Concerns We Address

A weak or recessed chin rarely sits in isolation. It commonly accompanies other changes across the lower face, including a softening jawline, reduced definition in profile, fullness beneath the chin or double chin, and a nose that looks more prominent than it is. Because the chin supports the tissues around it, restoring its projection can improve overall lower-face balance, which is why it is assessed alongside the cheeks, jaw, nose, and submental area rather than on its own.

Our Chin Augmentation Treatments

As we age, bone loss occurs from the mandible or lower-jaw, and if the chin was weak to begin with, then the face is often predisposed to early jowl formation. For this reason, correcting deficiency in the chin is essential: both from the perspective of the facial proportions, but also from the perspective of treating jowls. Dermal fillers are the mainstay of augmenting the chin and are performed by all of our non-surgical doctors including Dr Darren McKeown and Dr Rhona Cameron.

Chin augmentation at our clinic is built around dermal filler, restoring projection to a weak or ageing chin and supporting the lower face. Where the chin is part of a wider concern, treatment is often combined with the cheeks or jawline.

Chin/Jaw Filler

The mainstay of chin augmentation. Filler is placed at the chin and along the jaw to rebuild projection and definition where the chin is underdeveloped or has lost bone with age, restoring balance to the lower face with little downtime.

Treating the chin can also help to improve the appearance of the jowls, as in these patient cases. You can find out more about this approach in our explanation of Jowls.

Jowl Lift

Where a weak chin has contributed to early jowl formation, addressing the chin and jowls together restores support to the lower face. Depending on your anatomy and the degree of change, this may involve dermal filler, surgery, or a combination.

Cheek Filler

Often combined with chin augmentation where the lower face needs fuller support. Restoring volume to the cheekbone and lateral cheek lifts the tissues above the jawline, reducing the effect of jowling and balancing the correction across the face.

More about Chin augmentation

Before, During, and After Chin Augmentation Treatments

Chin augmentation with dermal filler is a straightforward, in-clinic treatment. What follows is simple, with the main considerations being comfort during treatment and a short settling period afterwards.

What To Expect Before Chin Augmentation Treatments

Every treatment begins with an assessment. We look at the size and position of your chin, how far it sits in relation to the rest of the profile, and how it relates to the cheeks, jaw and nose. That determines how much filler is needed and where it should be placed.

What To Expect During Chin Augmentation Treatments

The dermal fillers used at the chin contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that reduces discomfort, and topical numbing cream is available if you would like additional comfort. Filler is placed precisely to build projection, and you will know what is happening at each stage.

What To Expect After Chin Augmentation Treatments

The chin is shapelier straight away, though it is prone to swelling and will feel tender for a day or so. Most patients return to their routine immediately. Any bruising can be covered with makeup from the following day, and we encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights, to keep any swelling to a minimum.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Chin augmentation enables us to finesse the lower-face, though it can also be combined with treatment in the cheek. This enables us to replace lost volume from the cheekbone and the lateral cheek, thus supporting the soft tissues reducing the effect of jowling. However, treating the chin can also be of enormous benefit when the nose is noticeably large or out of balance. In fact, by building up a weakened chin, we can restore the natural proportions of the face, and even help the nose to appear smaller. If the nose is still obtrusive following chin augmentation, a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty will help it to integrate more seamlessly into the facial features.

Which anaesthetic is used?

We use dermal fillers which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort, while use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for patients who are anxious.

What's the downtime?

The chin is prone to swelling after dermal fillers, and will feel tender post-procedure, though this has usually settled by the following day. Most patients are ready to resume their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. If bruising occurs, it can be easily covered with post-procedure makeup, though this should not be applied until the next day. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.

When will I see results?

The results of dermal fillers are instantaneous, and the chin is immediately more shapely and better supported. However, best results are to be seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissues and the face has settled.

What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a treatment to improve the projection, shape and balance of the chin. At our clinic it is carried out with dermal filler, which rebuilds structure where the chin is naturally weak or has receded with age, strengthening the profile and supporting the lower face.

Will chin filler help my jawline?

Yes, indirectly. By restoring projection at the chin, filler adds support to the front of the lower face, which sharpens definition along the jawline and improves the transition from chin to jaw. Where the jawline itself needs work, filler can be placed along its length in the same treatment.

How long does chin filler last?

Longevity varies by patient and by the product used. Filler placed at the chin often lasts longer than filler in more mobile areas of the face, because the chin moves relatively little. Your assessment will give you a clearer idea of what to expect for your treatment.

Can chin augmentation make the nose look smaller?

It often can. A weak chin can make the nose appear more prominent than it is, so restoring projection to the chin rebalances the profile and can help the nose look smaller in proportion. Where the nose remains a concern, nose contouring can refine it further.

Is chin filler painful?

Most people find chin filler very manageable. The dermal fillers used contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, and numbing cream can be applied beforehand if you would like additional comfort. The chin is a straightforward area to treat, and most patients describe only brief pressure as the filler is placed.
