Lip lift

The mouth is one of the most aesthetically important parts of the face – second only to the eyes. When we are interacting with people we tend to look at their eyes and their mouth, which is what makes the mouth so important in aesthetics. One of the key changes that happens as we get older is that the upper lip becomes longer – meaning we can see less of the upper teeth when we talk or smile. This is a subtle, but powerful, sign of ageing that our brains associate with advanced again and a less kind or approachable disposition. The upper lip lift is a procedure designed to correct this issue.

How Does It Work?

Our technique

We utilise the deep plane lip lift technique in our practice. This involves making an incision in the contours under the nose – at the junction between the nostrils and the face – and then separating the skin from the deeper muscle tissue. We then anchor the muscle tissues to the deeper tissues at the base of the nose, before removing the excess skin and gently closing the skin with no tension placed on the skin. Using this technique allows us to create a strong, stable lift with a scar that is barely visible except on close examination.

The result of the procedure is that the lip should sit in a higher, more youthful position, allowing more of your teeth to be seen when you speak and smile. The procedure also helps to evert the upper lip, meaning that more of the red part of the lip can be seen – another important sign of youth and beauty.

What is the difference between a lip lift and a lip flip?

0:45

Playlist Lip Lift Treatment

Summary

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and upper lip, enhancing lip fullness and increasing tooth visibility when speaking or smiling. A lip flip is a non-surgical treatment using Botox to relax the upper lip muscles, subtly curling the lip outward for a fuller look. The results of a lip flip are temporary, lasting 3–4 months, whereas a lip lift provides permanent enhancement.

Transcript

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that involves removing a small amount of skin from the upper lip, just below the nose here, lifting the lip to shorten the distance between the nose and the lip. This provides a permanent, more youthful appearance and adds fullness to the upper lip. A lip flip, on the other hand, is a non-surgical treatment performed with Botox injections to relax the muscles around the upper lip, causing it to slightly curl upward, making the lips appear fuller. This effect is temporary, lasting 3-4 months. One of the key differences between a lip lift and a lip flip is that in a lip lift, you increase the amount of tooth show when you speak or smile, whilst a lip flip usually reduces this amount of tooth show.

Is a lip lift or lip filler better?

Summary

Lip lifts shorten the upper lip for a permanent, youthful enhancement, while fillers add temporary volume. Learn which procedure best suits your needs for natural-looking results.

Transcript

Lip lift surgery and lip filler work in different ways, fixing different problems. And so the best option really depends on what your problems are. The lip lift is best for patients who have a long upper lip with excess skin between the nose and the lip and not enough tooth share when they speak or smile. The biggest benefit of the lip lift is that it offers a long-lasting result. The surgery does result in scars, but they’re usually very well hidden in the crease just below the nose here. Lip filler, on the other hand, is best for people who have a good lip shape and positioning already, but would benefit from some volume. Fillers are temporary, although modern hyaluronic acid products often last for years. If you want a permanent result or have significant skin excess above your upper lip, a lip lift may be the better choice for you.

Considering a lip lift? Find out if you’re an ideal candidate based on facial proportions, health conditions, and aesthetic goals. Learn about the benefits of this permanent procedure and who should avoid it for the best results.

Transcript

The best candidates for a lip lift are people with excessive distance between the nose and the upper lip. It’s ideal for people who have a long upper lip or a noticeable distance between their nose and the upper lip, especially if you have too little tooth show when you’re speaking or smiling. Good candidates are also in good overall health with no underlying conditions that could impair wound healing. It’s also only suitable for patients who want permanent results. Patients should avoid having a lip lift if you have a gummy smile already, you should also avoid having this type of surgery or indeed any type of cosmetic surgery if you smoke or vape, since this may result in poor wound healing, which can lead to poor scarring.

Will a lip lift change my smile?

Summary

A lip lift enhances your upper lip’s shape, increasing tooth show and lip visibility for a more youthful smile. It subtly balances facial proportions without looking overdone. Watch the video to see how this procedure enhances natural beauty.

Transcript

A lip lift will change your smile by enhancing the shape and position of your upper lip. It will also increase the amount of tooth show you see when you smile. If you have a long upper lip, increasing the amount of tooth show when you speak or smile can be a profoundly positive aesthetic change. You will typically also have increased lip visibility, which is typically associated with a more youthful smile. Likewise, improving the proportions between the upper and the lower lip can really balance the whole of the face for the right patient. The changes are subtle, but designed to enhance your natural smile rather than drastically alter it. The outcome should be a smile that is both more youthful and more attractive.

Will a lip lift affect my nose?

0:39

Playlist Lip Lift Treatment

Summary

A properly performed lip lift won’t change your nose. Modern deep-plane techniques prevent tension on nasal tissues, ensuring natural results without altering nasal shape.

Transcript

A well-performed lip lift will not usually affect your nose. When lip lifts were first becoming popular in recent years, it was common to secure the lip lift to the tissues inside the nose. With this technique, however, as the scarring matures, this could pull down on the tip of the nose, causing changes in the nasal appearance. As we’ve understood more about the anatomy of the lip and the nose, the deep-plane lip lift technique has been developed to avoid this problem. This deep-plane lip lift technique involves doing a little more dissection to release the deeper tissues of the lip, which avoids placing tension on the nose and therefore avoids changing the appearance.

What are the risks of a lip lift?

0:52

Playlist Lip Lift Treatment

Summary

A lip lift is a safe and effective procedure, but like all surgeries, it carries some risks. Scarring is the primary concern, but when performed by an experienced surgeon, the incision is discreetly placed under the nose to blend in naturally. Other potential risks include asymmetry, which can be minimised through precise measurements and careful technique. Learn how expert planning and proper aftercare ensure optimal lip lift results.

Transcript

A lip lift is usually a safe and straightforward procedure that produces predictable results. However, like all procedures, there are some risks. The main risk we worry about is scarring. A small scar is inevitable with any surgical procedure. For a lip lift, the scar is placed in the natural fold just under the nose, which helps to blend it in and keep it looking discreet. We minimise this visibility of scarring by carefully planning the incision to ensure that it’s as unnoticeable as possible and using really very fine sutures to reduce its appearance. Asymmetry is another risk. To prevent this, we perform precise measurements and symmetry checks throughout the procedure to ensure it’s all well-balanced. If any unevenness occurs, it can usually be corrected with a minor touch-up. With proper aftercare and a skilled surgeon, the risks of a lip lift are low, and the results are generally safe and very effective.

Does lip lift include my bottom lip?

0:34

Playlist Lip Lift Treatment

Summary

A lip lift enhances the upper lip, but if your lower lip sags or lacks volume, Botox or fillers can help. Learn about non-surgical and surgical options for improving lower lip appearance.

Transcript

A lip lift focuses on the upper lip and the area above it, so it doesn’t affect the bottom. If you feel your bottom lip sags too low and you can see too much of your lower teeth when you speak, this can be reduced by some injections of Botox into the muscles just below the lower lip. Likewise, if you feel your lower lip would benefit from some extra volume, then this can be provided by some filler injections. There are some surgical options to elevate the lower lip, like some V2Y advancement flaps and such, although the results of these are usually quite poor, and most surgeons recommend non-surgical treatments instead.

What to Expect

The procedure

The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, which means you are awake throughout.

First the doctor performs some numbing injections – similar to the dentist – before delicately making his incision and lifting the lip. After surgery you will have very fine stitches that will remain in place for 5-7 days.

When the stitches are removed, the scar will initially look red although this can be covered with make up from around day 10 onwards. Over time, the scar will eventually fade to a fine white line that doesn’t bother most patients.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The main benefit of the lip lift is a more youthful smile, that allows people to see more of your teeth when you speak and smile. A subtle, but important sign of youth. The other benefit is that most patients enjoy better lip eversion, which allows more of the red part of the lip to be seen which is also a more youthful feature.

Which anaesthetic is used?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you are awake throughout and free to go home immediately after the procedure.

What's the downtime?

The swelling has usually subsided enough to let you resume normal activities in around 7-10 days.

When will I see results?

You will be able to see an instant improvement, although initially you will be quite swollen which will make it look exaggerated. Most of the initial dramatic swelling will go down in the first 10 days, although it will take several months for the subtle, residual swelling to go and for you to appreciate the final outcome.
