Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right for You? What the Process, Recovery and Risks Involve

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue and skin to reduce volume, improve breast proportion, and reposition the nipples to create a more balanced breast shape. It can also help relieve physical discomfort, including back, neck, and shoulder pain. At McKeown Medical in Glasgow, the procedure is led by Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr Kavita Sharma.

For many patients, the decision to explore breast reduction surgery is as much functional as aesthetic. Larger breasts can affect everyday comfort, physical activity, and the way clothing fits, making surgery an option for those seeking both physical relief and improved proportions. At McKeown Medical in Glasgow, breast reduction surgery begins with a consultation that considers each patient’s symptoms, anatomy, and aesthetic goals.

What Breast Reduction Surgery Does

This surgery aims to create smaller, lighter breasts that are better proportioned to your frame. Excess tissue and skin are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to achieve a more balanced, natural-looking contour.

Breast size, shape, skin quality, and tissue composition differ between patients, so the amount of reduction and the surgical approach are tailored to individual anatomy and goals.

Who May Be Suited to Breast Reduction

Patients consider breast reduction for both physical and aesthetic reasons. Those with larger breasts may experience back, neck, or shoulder pain, bra-strap grooving, and skin irritation, which can improve following surgery. Others feel their breast size is out of proportion with the rest of their body, while many have a combination of concerns.

Some patients want a significant reduction in volume, while others prefer a more moderate change combined with a breast lift for a more lifted, proportionate shape. Dr Sharma will assess your breast anatomy, symptoms, and goals to determine whether surgery is suitable and what degree of reduction may be appropriate.

Consultation With Dr Kavita Sharma

Dr Kavita Sharma (GMC 7039911, FRCS(Plast)) is a Specialist Registered Consultant Plastic Surgeon who also works at the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, specialising in microsurgical and oncoplastic breast reconstruction. At McKeown Medical, her experience in reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery informs her individual approach to this surgery.

During your consultation, Dr Sharma will discuss your reasons for considering surgery, the amount of reduction you would like, and your preferences for breast shape and nipple position. She will assess your anatomy, explain the possible incision and scar patterns, and discuss recovery, potential risks, and realistic outcomes. Together, you can explore the most appropriate surgical approach for your needs.

What to Expect Before Breast Reduction Surgery

The process begins with a conversation with one of McKeown Medical’s Patient Relationship Managers, who can answer your initial questions, explain the treatment pathway, and help you prepare for your consultation. You then meet Dr Sharma to discuss your medical history, goals, and expectations.

Following your appointment, you receive a written summary of your proposed surgical plan and quotation. A second consultation is also available and included in the price, giving you an opportunity to revisit your options before making a decision.

Before surgery, a nurse completes a pre-assessment call, and the Consultant Anaesthetist reviews your medical information to assess your suitability for the planned anaesthetic.

What the Procedure Involves

Breast reduction surgery at McKeown Medical is performed under deep sedation with local anaesthetic and typically takes two to three hours. During the procedure, Dr Sharma removes excess breast tissue and skin, reshapes the remaining tissue, and repositions the nipples to create a smaller, more proportionate breast shape.

The incision pattern and surgical technique depend on your anatomy and the amount of reduction required. Dr Sharma will explain the recommended approach during your consultation, including where scars are likely to be positioned and what you can expect from the results.

Recovery and Aftercare

Downtime after breast reduction is typically around one week at McKeown Medical, although complete recovery takes longer. The NHS advises that full recovery can take two to six weeks. Depending on the physical demands of your job, you may need additional time away from work, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are generally restricted for several weeks.

A nurse will call the day after surgery to check your comfort and pain control, followed by an in-clinic wound check around one week later. You will then see Dr Sharma for reviews at six and twelve weeks, with additional appointments arranged if needed. The final breast shape settles gradually as swelling subsides, so the early appearance should not be considered the finished result. Results are generally long-lasting, although ageing, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can affect them over time.

Scarring, Risks, and Realistic Expectations

Scarring is an inherent part of this surgery. Although scars generally become less noticeable over time, they do not disappear completely. Their location and extent depend on the surgical technique, which Dr Sharma will explain during your consultation.

Other potential risks include changes in nipple sensation, wound-healing difficulties, asymmetry, and reduced ability to breastfeed. The likelihood and extent of these effects vary between patients and surgical approaches. Dr Sharma will discuss these considerations with you so you can make an informed decision about whether surgery is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will breast reduction help with back and neck pain?

Surgery can help relieve back, neck, and shoulder pain associated with larger breasts. Other symptoms, including bra-strap grooving and skin irritation, may also improve. Individual results vary, and Dr Sharma will discuss what you can realistically expect based on your symptoms.

What type of anaesthesia is used?

At McKeown Medical, the procedure is performed under deep sedation with local anaesthetic. A Consultant Anaesthetist reviews your case before surgery, and your surgical team will explain the process during consultation and pre-operative planning.

How long do the results last?

Results are generally long-lasting. The final shape develops gradually as swelling subsides, although ageing, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can affect breast size and contour over time.

Will breast reduction leave scars?

Yes, the surgery leaves scars that generally become less noticeable over time. Their location and extent depend on the surgical technique, which Dr Sharma will explain during your consultation.

Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?

Breast reduction can affect your ability to breastfeed. Some patients can still breastfeed afterwards, but this cannot be guaranteed. If you are planning a pregnancy, Dr Sharma will discuss how surgery may affect your options.

How to Get Rid of Love Handles: Body Contouring for Stubborn Waist and Flank Fat

Love handles are usually genetically determined fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Body contouring at McKeown Medical combines Ultrasound...

Ok. So this is a younger patient in her late 30s and a lot of people might reasonably say "She's gorgeous, what does she need anything done for?"

And I agree. But she had a little bit of excess fatty tissue around her jawline and neck which really bothered her, especially when she moved her neck. She wanted her jawline to look a bit slimmer and more defined and so we did a Quantum Lift for her.

This is her just 24 hours later. Her bruising and swelling is not too bad at all, mainly because she didn't have a huge amount done - although she still has a lot of healing to go over the next few months.

She is already loving the result however! What do you think?
This is a little sneak peek of our upcoming podcast between Dr Darren (@drdarrenmckeown) and our new body contouring expert, Dr George Christopolous (@gchristopoulos). The full video will be going live later this week.
On a scale of 1-10, how excited are we for George to start his body contouring in Scotland?
I’m super excited to welcome Dr George Christopoulos to the dream team at McKeown Medical.

George is a plastic surgeon with a particular interest in body contouring: liposuction, tummy tucks, arm lifts and thigh lifts.

What I really love about George’s work is his approach to liposuction. It’s not about simply emptying out as much fat as possible. He approaches the body almost like a sculptor, thinking about shape, proportion, contours, highlights and shadows. It’s those details that can elevate a fairly standard liposuction result into something really special.

You can check out some of his work on his own page @gchristopoulos

I’ve also filmed a podcast with George where we get into all things body contouring — what makes a great liposuction result, loose skin, tummy tucks, lipoedema, technology and quite a lot more. I’ll be posting that over the next couple of days.

In the meantime, if you want to meet the man himself, George’s diary is now open for consultations at McKeown Medical.
IS THE QUANTUM LIFT A CUT-PRICE FACELIFT?

No, and here’s why.

A deep plane facelift goes deeper into the face, removing deep fat, muscle and salivary glands which is how you get those sharp neck contours. The Quantum Lift works more superficially, tightening skin and reshaping jowls in 90 minutes under local anaesthetic, but it can’t reach those deeper structures.

I believe in the Quantum Lift. I just won’t pretend it suits everyone.

Good aesthetic medicine means the right procedure for the right patient, not one treatment doing it all.
