How Does It Work?

Gynaecomastia Surgery (Male Chest Reduction)

Gynaecomastia surgery is designed to reduce excess fullness in the male chest and create a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest contour. At McKeown Medical, our preferred approach is Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction — an advanced body contouring technique combining Quantum RF skin tightening, Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) and Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL). This allows us to remove excess fatty tissue while also tightening the skin and sculpting the chest more precisely than traditional liposuction alone. In many patients, this minimally invasive approach is all that is required to achieve an excellent result.

Some patients also have a significant amount of dense glandular tissue beneath the nipple which cannot be fully removed with liposuction alone. In these cases, a small incision hidden along the lower edge of the nipple can be used to surgically remove the gland and create a flatter contour. More extensive skin excision procedures are only required in a minority of patients with significant loose skin, usually following major weight loss or longstanding severe gynaecomastia.

Benefits of Gynaecomastia Surgery

Gynaecomastia treatment can provide significant physical and psychological benefits, including:

  • Flatter, firmer chest contour
  • Improved chest definition
  • Removal of excess fatty and glandular tissue
  • Improved confidence in fitted clothing and at the gym
  • Long-lasting results when combined with a healthy lifestyle

Most procedures are performed under IV sedation delivered by a consultant anaesthetist, meaning patients sleep comfortably throughout treatment but recover more quickly than with a traditional general anaesthetic. Fine dissolvable stitches are used where necessary, and most patients feel comfortable returning to work within around 7–10 days while continuing to wear a supportive compression garment during recovery.

We offer two approaches, depending on the degree of excess tissue:

Standard Gynaecomastia Surgery (Liposuction + Gland Removal):
First, we use liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue from the chest area. A small U-shaped incision is then made along the lower edge of the nipple, and glandular tissue is surgically excised for a flatter chest.

Gynaecomastia Surgery with Skin Excision:
If there is a lot of excess skin, then in addition to the standard procedure, a circular incision is made around the entire nipple (areola). This allows removal of both the glandular tissue and redundant skin, tightening the chest contour.

Fine dissolvable stitches are used for closure, and scars are placed as discreetly as possible.

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 7–10 days. Wearing a supportive compression garment helps achieve the best results during healing.

What to Expect

Risks of Gynaecomastia Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, gynaecomastia surgery carries some risks. At McKeown, we take every precaution to support your healing and ensure a safe, smooth recovery.

Possible risks include:

  • Bruising and Swelling: This is common and usually settles within a few weeks. Subtle swelling may continue to refine over a few months.
  • Infection: This is uncommon. You will be prescribed antibiotics to support your healing journey.
  • Scarring: Scars are placed discreetly along the edge of the nipple or around the areola. Over time, they typically fade well.
  • Asymmetry: Minor natural differences between sides may remain.
  • Numbness: Temporary numbness around the chest or nipples is common and usually improves with time.
  • Contour Irregularities: Rarely, small uneven areas may occur and can be corrected with minor touch-ups if needed.
  • Nipple necrosis: Rarely, the blood supply to the nipple can be compromised, resulting in loss of the nipple.
  • Unsatisfactory Results: In some cases, a revision surgery may be needed to refine the outcome.

All potential risks will be fully discussed with you during your consultation with our expert plastic surgeon.

Common Questions

How long do the results of gynaecomastia surgery last?

The results are typically permanent, especially if combined with a healthy lifestyle. Significant weight gain or hormonal changes can affect the long-term result.

Will I have visible scars after gynaecomastia surgery?

Scars are placed carefully around the nipple or areola and are typically discreet. Over time, they fade and become much less noticeable.

What is the recovery like after gynaecomastia surgery?

You can expect mild swelling, bruising, and tightness for the first 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days. A compression garment should be worn as directed to help shape and support the chest.

Does gynaecomastia surgery hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Some mild discomfort or tightness afterward is normal and usually well controlled with simple pain relief.

Can gynaecomastia surgery be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Some patients choose to combine male chest reduction with abdominal liposuction or other body contouring procedures.

Am I suitable for gynaecomastia surgery?

Good candidates are healthy individuals with excess breast tissue, fat, or skin who are looking for a permanent reduction and improved chest contour. Your suitability will be fully assessed during your consultation.
