Understanding Jowls: Causes and Treatments

HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE WORK?

The procedure begins by injecting a volume of local anaesthetic, adrenaline and salty water into the fatty tissue under the chin.

This fluid – known as tumescent fluid – reduces the amount of bleeding and bruising from the procedure and assists with the removal of fat.
A small, 1.5mm cannula is then inserted through the skin crease below the chin and attached to a 10ml syringe through which fat is aspirated.

Using this technique around 10-20ml of fat can be removed, which is usually enough to make a significant improvement in neck contour for most people.

What Happens Afterwards?

After the procedure you will be required to wear a neck strap continuously for at least 48 hours, and then over night for the next week or two.

This is to assist the skin to contract down to its new position. You may have some bruising and swelling in the area that has been treated, which can take up to a couple of weeks to resolve depending on how severe it is. The skin under the chin will feel very firm and stiff, which can last for several months. In the first couple of months it is possible to feel some lumps in the tissue that require firm massage to help them go away. You should expect to see the final result 6-12 months after the procedure.

How Long Do The Results Last?

When the fat cells are removed, the result is permanent so long as you remain at a steady weight.

What Are The Limitations of The Procedure?

Microliposuction of the neck is best suited to people who are of roughly normal weight with mild to moderate excess fat under the chin.

If you have substantial fatty deposits, or significantly problems with excess skin or muscle laxity, then you may be better suited to formal liposuction in a hospital environment with or without a traditional neck lift operation.
