ProFractional

The ProFractional laser device from Sciton is one of the most powerful lasers on the market. It has the power to penetrate right to the bottom layers of the skin and beyond should that be required. In contrast to the Contour TRL device, which removes the entire surface of the skin, the ProFractional device only removes a fraction of the skins surface – which is what allows us to safely go deeper down into the skin. It is useful when treating issues that are buried in the deeper layers of the skin – particularly scarring, such as that from surgical wounds, trauma or acne.

ProFractional laser treatment

The ProFractional laser is one of the most powerful and accurate lasers on the market. It allows us to accurately decide both the depth of penetration as well as the percentage (or fraction) of the surface we want to remove, with surgical precision. This makes it our go-to tool for treating most types of scars.

Some scars can be treated simply with some topical numbing cream. Usually however we are penetrating quite deeply and so an injection of local anaesthetic is required before the treatment.

The treatment itself can take anywhere from a few minutes, up to 45 minutes – depending on the extent of the scarring being treated. Afterwards you can expect the skin to be red, dry and flaky for around a week afterwards. Most scars require multiple sessions of treatment to achieve the best results, although it depends on each patients circumstances and particular type of scarring. This will be discussed with you at your initial consultation where we make a treatment plan for you.

Although you can never get rid of scarring completely, we can usually achieve significant improvement.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The ProFractional device can help to reduce the appearance of scars. Typically we combine this treatment with other modalities of scar treatment like light therapy to redness redness or fillers to reduce indentations.

Which anaesthetic is used?

ProFractional can be performed with either numbing cream or injections of local anaesthetic – it depends on the location and depth of the scar and the planned treatment settings.

What's the downtime?

There will be redness and dry flaky skin for around one week after treatment, although this varies depending on the treating you are having. Some very deep treatments can leave some lingering redness for a couple of months after treatment.

When will I see results?

It typically takes 3-6 months after your last session of treatment to be able to appreciate the full impact of the collagen remodelling and the final outcome of treatment.
