Not all tummy tucks are the same.
In fact, one of the biggest misconceptions about abdominal surgery is that there is only one type of tummy tuck. The reality is that patients present with very different concerns. Some have a small amount of loose skin below the belly button after pregnancy. Others have separated abdominal muscles that make the abdomen protrude despite maintaining a healthy weight. Some have significant excess skin following weight loss, whilst many also have stubborn fat around the upper abdomen and flanks that a traditional tummy tuck alone cannot address.

At McKeown Medical, we believe the best results come from choosing the least invasive procedure capable of achieving your goals, rather than performing the same operation on every patient. We also aim to marry the best technique for your body, with the most advanced body contouring technology available to give you an outstanding result.
For some people this may be a straightforward mini tummy tuck. Others benefit from combining surgery with Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction to sculpt the waist and upper abdomen. Some require repair of separated abdominal muscles, whilst others need a full abdominoplasty to remove larger amounts of excess skin.
Your consultation with Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr George Christopoulos is focused on understanding your anatomy, your goals and designing a bespoke treatment plan specifically for you.
Abdominoplasty can address several different problems, including:
Many patients have a combination of these concerns rather than just one, which is why every procedure is tailored to the individual.
A mini tummy tuck is the least invasive form of abdominoplasty.
It removes loose skin from below the belly button, producing a flatter lower abdomen whilst leaving the umbilicus untouched. Because the dissection is limited, recovery is generally quicker than after a full tummy tuck.
A mini tummy tuck is particularly suitable for patients who have maintained a healthy weight but have been left with a small amount of loose skin following pregnancy or weight loss.
Many patients have not only loose skin but also stubborn fat affecting the upper abdomen, waist and flanks.
In these patients, combining a mini tummy tuck with Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction can produce a significantly more balanced and sculpted result.
Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction is a cutting edge combination of three technologies which allows us to melt fat, precisely contour and tighten skin. By employing this technology in combination with a mini-tummy tuck, we can treat some patients who would have traditionally needed a fully tummy tuck with this less invasive option.
Rather than simply making the lower tummy flatter, this combination creates improved definition across the entire abdominal contour and waistline.
Pregnancy frequently causes the abdominal muscles to separate, a condition known as rectus diastasis.
This separation weakens the abdominal wall and can create the appearance of a persistent “mummy tummy” even in slim patients.
The classic way of performing this repair was to undertake a full abdominoplasty, although Dr George often uses a new specialised technique where the belly button can be temporarily floated from the abdominal wall, allowing Dr George to elevate the tissues and repair the abdominal muscles from the breastbone all the way down to the pubic bone.
Once the muscle repair has been completed, excess lower abdominal skin is removed and the belly button is reattached in its original position, avoiding the need for a scar around the umbilicus.
For many patients this provides the benefits of full muscle repair whilst retaining a shorter scar than a traditional full tummy tuck.
This procedure is also commonly combined with Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction to further improve contour.
Some patients simply have too much loose skin for a mini tummy tuck to produce an optimal result.
A full abdominoplasty allows excess skin to be removed from both the lower and upper abdomen whilst repositioning the belly button into its natural position.
The abdominal muscles can also be repaired where required.
For patients following major weight loss or multiple pregnancies, this procedure can dramatically improve abdominal contour and restore a flatter, firmer appearance.
Whenever appropriate, we combine a full tummy tuck with Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction to contour the upper abdomen, waist and flanks. This creates a smoother transition between the treated areas and helps achieve a more natural, athletic shape than skin excision alone.
Traditional tummy tucks primarily remove skin.
However, many patients also have areas of stubborn fat that cannot be addressed simply by removing skin.
Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction allows us to sculpt these areas whilst preserving connective tissue and minimising trauma to surrounding structures. This means we can improve not only the front of the abdomen but also the waistline and flanks, creating a more sculpted overall body shape.
Rather than thinking of your surgery as simply removing loose skin, we view it as comprehensive abdominal contouring.
Finding the right treatment for you is the most important factor in ensuring that you are on the correct path to achieve the results you desire. Our pre-consultation form helps us to identify your needs and, ultimately, gets you on the right path to achieving your optimal results.
There is no single answer.
The best procedure depends on several factors, including:
This is why we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
During your consultation, Dr George will carefully examine your abdomen, discuss your goals and explain which procedure—or combination of procedures—is most likely to achieve the result you are looking for.
Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and the results you are looking to achieve.
Our philosophy is simple.
Rather than offering every patient the same operation, we tailor surgery to the individual.
By combining modern body contouring techniques, including Quantum Ultrasonic Liposuction, with advanced abdominal surgery, we are able to create bespoke treatment plans designed around your anatomy, lifestyle and goals.
Whether you require a straightforward mini tummy tuck or comprehensive abdominal contouring with muscle repair and liposuction, your treatment plan is built specifically for you—with the aim of achieving the best possible result whilst avoiding unnecessary surgery.
All tummy tuck procedures at McKeown Medical are performed under intravenous sedation in our purpose-built day surgery facility.
Patients return home the same day.
The exact recovery depends on the procedure performed. Mini tummy tucks generally involve a quicker recovery than full abdominoplasty, whilst muscle repair can increase abdominal tightness during the early healing period.
Compression garments are worn following surgery to support healing, and strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Swelling gradually settles over the following months, with the final contour continuing to improve as healing progresses.
