Thread veins and facial redness appear when small blood vessels near the surface of the skin become visible, either as fine red lines or as a diffuse flush across the cheeks and nose. Causes include genetics, sun damage, rosacea, and hormonal change. Treatment is most effective with light-based technologies that target the visible vessels directly.

For many patients, thread veins and persistent facial redness are among the most frustrating skin concerns to address. They rarely respond to skincare alone, cannot be covered convincingly with makeup over time, and often worsen with age. At McKeown Medical Glasgow, BBL BroadBand Light is one of several approaches used to address these changes, chosen based on the underlying cause and the pattern of vessels being treated.
Thread veins, sometimes called broken capillaries or telangiectasia, are small dilated blood vessels sitting close to the surface of the skin. They typically appear as fine red or purple lines, most often across the nose, cheeks, and chin, though they can also develop on the legs. On the face, they are usually the result of small vessels that have permanently widened and become visible through the skin.
Despite the common description of “broken” capillaries, the vessels are not actually broken. They are dilated and no longer able to constrict back to their original size, which is why they remain visible even when the skin is at rest.
Facial redness is a broader concern that can involve thread veins, diffuse flushing across the cheeks and nose, or a combination of both. Some patients experience it as a persistent background flush that gives the face a warm or ruddy appearance. Others notice it primarily as episodes of flushing triggered by heat, alcohol, spicy food, or emotional response. In many patients, both patterns are present.
The distinction matters because different underlying mechanisms respond to different treatments. Discrete thread veins respond well to targeted vessel treatment. Diffuse redness may need a broader treatment approach that addresses vessel density and inflammatory changes across a wider area.
Several factors contribute to the development of thread veins and facial redness, and most patients present with a combination of them.
Most patients present with a combination of these factors rather than a single cause, which is why treatment is rarely one-size-fits-all.
One of the most common patterns seen at consultation is patients who have invested in extensive skincare regimes without meaningful improvement in redness or visible vessels. This is not a failure of the products. Skincare can improve skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and support overall skin health, but it cannot close a dilated blood vessel or reduce the density of visible vessels beneath the skin. Once the change is structural, treatment that acts on the vessel itself is generally required.
At McKeown Medical Glasgow, one of the treatments offered for thread veins and facial redness is BBL HERO by Sciton, an advanced broadband light platform. HERO stands for High Energy Rapid Output, which refers to the device’s ability to treat larger areas at higher energy while keeping each session shorter.
BBL HERO delivers precisely calibrated wavelengths of light to the skin, where the light is absorbed preferentially by the haemoglobin in visible blood vessels. The absorbed energy heats the targeted vessel, which is subsequently broken down and cleared by the body over the weeks following treatment. Because the platform uses light rather than a physical device against the skin, it can address both discrete thread veins and diffuse redness in the same session. Wavelength and settings are adjusted according to the type of concern being treated, which is why consultation and a test patch are a standard part of planning.
A course of treatment is often recommended, with the number and spacing of sessions tailored to the severity of the redness and the way each patient’s skin responds. Maintenance treatments may then be discussed at consultation once the initial course is complete.
BBL HERO is well suited to a range of thread vein and redness presentations, and for most patients it is the main treatment. Where rosacea is also present, it is used alongside prescription skincare, which helps settle the inflammation between sessions. Where skin texture, sun damage or pigmentation is also a concern, HALO laser treatment can be paired with it, with the combination decided at consultation.
Patients often come in focused on a single visible thread vein or a specific patch of redness. On assessment, the surrounding skin frequently shows a broader pattern of vessel density or early rosacea features that would benefit from wider treatment. Treating one visible vessel in isolation can satisfy the immediate concern but often leaves the underlying pattern unchanged, and new vessels tend to appear over time.
Others have accepted persistent facial flushing as part of their natural complexion for years. On closer assessment there is often a treatable vascular component that responds well to structured light-based treatment. The reverse is also common. Patients arrive concerned primarily about redness and are found to have significant underlying sun damage contributing to the appearance, in which case addressing both the vessels and the pigmentary changes across the same treatment course delivers a more balanced result than treating the redness in isolation.
None of these is a wrong starting point. The consultation exists to establish what is actually going on beneath the surface and to select the appropriate treatment for the individual patient, rather than to fit every presentation to the same protocol.
Every consultation for thread veins and facial redness at McKeown Medical Glasgow begins with a structured assessment. BBL treatments are delivered by Dr Rhona Cameron and the experienced clinical team at McKeown Medical, with assessment examining the type and distribution of visible vessels, the underlying skin quality, and any signs of rosacea or other inflammatory patterns before an approach is recommended. For some patients, BBL HERO alone is appropriate. For others, a combined plan across several treatment modalities delivers a more balanced result.
Established thread veins typically persist without treatment and can gradually become more prominent over time as new vessels develop. Treatment that acts on the vessels themselves is generally required for meaningful improvement.
Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap against the skin, comparable to a mild elastic band. Cooling is used throughout the treatment for comfort, and no anaesthetic is typically required.
A course of treatment is often recommended, with the number and spacing of sessions tailored to the severity of the redness and the way your skin responds. The exact plan is discussed openly at consultation.
Mild redness and a warm sensation are common for a few hours after treatment. Some patients experience temporary darkening of pigmented spots that fade over the following days. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, though full aftercare guidance is provided at consultation.
BBL HERO cannot cure rosacea, but it can significantly reduce the visible redness and flushing that accompany the condition. Combining BBL HERO with ongoing medical management typically produces the most stable long-term result.

Another beautiful deep plane face and neck lift result from @bramhallplasticsurgery . For patients who want the best possible improvement the deep plane remains the gold standard!
Ok. So this is a younger patient in her late 30s and a lot of people might reasonably say "She`s gorgeous, what does she need anything done for?"
And I agree. But she had a little bit of excess fatty tissue around her jawline and neck which really bothered her, especially when she moved her neck. She wanted her jawline to look a bit slimmer and more defined and so we did a Quantum Lift for her.
This is her just 24 hours later. Her bruising and swelling is not too bad at all, mainly because she didn`t have a huge amount done - although she still has a lot of healing to go over the next few months.
She is already loving the result however! What do you think?
Arm lift is rapidly becoming one of our most popular procedures in the clinic. For more minor cases we can often achieve enough tightening simply with some liposuction and Quantum RF.
When patients have more skin excess, however, and want the tightest result possible you cannot beat a traditional brachioplasty, which is what this patient had with the very talented Dr Kavita. The patient is delighted with the result.
What do you think?
This is a little sneak peek of our upcoming podcast between Dr Darren (@drdarrenmckeown) and our new body contouring expert, Dr George Christopolous (@gchristopoulos). The full video will be going live later this week.
On a scale of 1-10, how excited are we for George to start his body contouring in Scotland?
Thank you to this lovely 67 year old patient who has allowed us to share the early results of her deep plane face and neck lift.
She’s just three weeks post her procedure which she had under local anaesthetic and sedation with the ever-talented @bramhallplasticsurgery here in the clinic, and while she’s still a little swollen around the jawline (where swelling tends to hang around the longest), we think she’s looking absolutely fabulous already.
The patient is delighted. What do you think?
I’m super excited to welcome Dr George Christopoulos to the dream team at McKeown Medical.
George is a plastic surgeon with a particular interest in body contouring: liposuction, tummy tucks, arm lifts and thigh lifts.
What I really love about George’s work is his approach to liposuction. It’s not about simply emptying out as much fat as possible. He approaches the body almost like a sculptor, thinking about shape, proportion, contours, highlights and shadows. It’s those details that can elevate a fairly standard liposuction result into something really special.
You can check out some of his work on his own page @gchristopoulos
I’ve also filmed a podcast with George where we get into all things body contouring — what makes a great liposuction result, loose skin, tummy tucks, lipoedema, technology and quite a lot more. I’ll be posting that over the next couple of days.
In the meantime, if you want to meet the man himself, George’s diary is now open for consultations at McKeown Medical.
What does filler look like? This!
So many people are terrified of fillers. When it’s done well, this is what it looks like. Everything looks softer. The bags under the eyes look less obvious. But nothing looks different.
The patient is delighted. What do you think?
IS THE QUANTUM LIFT A CUT-PRICE FACELIFT?
No, and here’s why.
A deep plane facelift goes deeper into the face, removing deep fat, muscle and salivary glands which is how you get those sharp neck contours. The Quantum Lift works more superficially, tightening skin and reshaping jowls in 90 minutes under local anaesthetic, but it can’t reach those deeper structures.
I believe in the Quantum Lift. I just won’t pretend it suits everyone.
Good aesthetic medicine means the right procedure for the right patient, not one treatment doing it all.

Some more Quantum Lift magic!
This patient is just 24 hours after her Quantum lift with fat redistribution. As part of the procedure we sometimes take some of excess fat that’s been removed from the neck and jowls and replace it along the chin and jaw to create more definition.
Although she’s still bruised and swollen, I think we can all already see where this result is heading.
