The concept of an anti-wrinkle brow lift sounds appealing – but what is it? How does it work? Doesn’t everyone who gets anti-wrinkle injections want a brow lift?
In this article, I want to demystify the anti-wrinkle brow lift – delving into the science behind how it works, as well as explaining when I think it’s helpful and when I think it should be avoided.
I will also address common concerns and questions. These include the safety of the procedure, potential side effects, and the longevity of the results.
By the end of this article, you should have a comprehensive understanding of anti-wrinkle brow lifts and a good idea of whether or not it might be a good treatment option for you.
An anti-wrinkle brow lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses anti-wrinkle injections to lift the eyebrows. This treatment targets the muscles that pull the eyebrows down. Now, if we can remember all the way back to high school physics if we reduce the force being exerted by the depressor muscles (those that pull the eyebrows down), it means the relative force being exerted by the elevator muscles (those that pull the eyebrows up the way) is increased. This is the physics of how it works.
In real terms, to achieve an anti-wrinkle brow lift, we need to relax the frown muscles (between the eyebrows) and the muscles around the eyes because both of these muscle groups pull the eyebrows down when they contract. We need to leave the frontalis muscle – the main forehead muscle – at least partially intact because we are relying on that muscle to pull the eyebrows up.
Now, here is a big piece of context that you should be aware of. The anti-wrinkle brow lift is not a licensed use for the medication. That means it is ‘off-label’. Doctors perform this treatment thousands of times per day all over the world, and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that it is both safe and effective, but it has not been through the same level of rigorous clinical trials that other uses of the drug have been, and so you should always bear this in mind and talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.
This procedure differs significantly from a traditional brow lift, which is a surgical procedure. Surgical brow lifts involve making incisions to physically lift the skin and underlying tissues. In contrast, an anti-wrinkle brow lift achieves a similar effect without the need for incisions or anaesthetic.
Patients typically seek an anti-wrinkle brow lift to address drooping brows or if they have a little bit of excess skin in the upper eyelid. Excess skin in the upper eyelid is best treated using a blepharoplasty procedure, although if your excess skin is milder, then an anti-wrinkle brow lift may be a suitable alternative. Even if you have more significant excess skin but just don’t want to have a surgical procedure, then trying an anti-wrinkle brow lift is a reasonable alternative.
In the hands of a qualified aesthetic doctor, an anti-wrinkle brow lift can be a safe and effective part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. It’s essential to consult with a professional to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific needs and aesthetic goals.
Anti-wrinkle injections are a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In aesthetic medicine, it’s used in small, controlled doses to relax specific muscles. When injected into the muscles that pull the eyebrows down, anti-wrinkle injections cause these muscles to relax, allowing the eyebrows to lift.
The anatomy of the forehead and brow area is complex, with several muscles working together to create facial expressions. The primary muscles targeted during an anti-wrinkle brow lift are the corrugator supercilii, procerus, and orbicularis oculi muscles. These muscles are responsible for pulling the eyebrows down and creating wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows.
By carefully injecting anti-wrinkle into these muscles, a skilled practitioner can achieve a subtle lift of the eyebrows. This lift can help to smooth out wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance. However, the exact placement and dosage of anti-wrinkle injections will depend on the individual’s unique facial structure and goals.
The short answer to this question is ‘no’. The anti-wrinkle brow lift may be a suitable option for you if you have heavy eyebrows that sit in a low position on your forehead or if you have a little excess skin in the upper eyelid. However, with advancing age not everyone changes in the same way.
Somewhat counterintuitively, many people’s eyebrows actually get higher as they get older. Next time you visit a nursing home, take a look at the position of the eyebrows on the foreheads of senior citizens. They are often much higher, and so raising the eyebrows is only aesthetically indicated if you are ageing in a way that causes the eyebrows to move lower. If your eyebrows are already in a normal position and you raise them, it can create an unnatural surprised look that is a tell-tale sign of having work done – so the anti-wrinkle brow lift needs to be used with caution!
One of the primary benefits of an anti-wrinkle brow lift is its minimally invasive nature. Unlike surgical brow lifts, which involve incisions and a recovery period, anti-wrinkle is administered through small injections. This makes it a less daunting option for many patients, particularly those who are apprehensive about undergoing surgery.
The procedure is typically quick and often completed within 15 minutes. This short procedure time, coupled with the minimal downtime, makes anti-wrinkle brow lifts an attractive option for busy individuals. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, making it an easier choice.
Moreover, the minimally invasive nature of anti-wrinkle reduces the risk of complications associated with surgical procedures, such as infection or scarring.
Lastly, the minimally invasive nature of anti-wrinkle allows for a more gradual approach to facial rejuvenation. This can result in a more natural-looking outcome, as changes can be made subtly over time rather than all at once, as with surgery. This gradual approach can also help patients feel more in control of their aesthetic journey.
An anti-wrinkle brow lift begins with a thorough consultation with a qualified aesthetic medicine practitioner. This consultation is crucial to discuss your aesthetic goals, assess your facial structure, and determine the most effective treatment plan. It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedure.
During the procedure, the doctor will use a fine needle to inject anti-wrinkle into specific muscles in your forehead and brow area. These injections are strategically placed to relax the muscles that pull the brows down, allowing the muscles that lift the brows to function unopposed. This results in a subtle lift of the brows and a smoother forehead.
The procedure is typically quick and often completed within 15 minutes. While some patients report a slight pinching sensation during the injections, most find the procedure to be relatively comfortable.
After the procedure, you may notice some redness and swelling at the injection sites. These little ‘bumps’ go down very quickly, usually within about 15-20 minutes, so they are gone by the time you get back to the car.
The full effects of an anti-wrinkle brow lift are typically visible within 7 to 14 days after the procedure. During this time, you’ll notice a gradual lifting of the brows and a reduction in wrinkles. The results can last between 3 to 6 months, depending on individual factors such as how your body metabolizes the drug. Regular maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain the lift effect.
Anti-wrinkle treatments have a well-established safety profile when administered by a trained professional. It has been used in medicine for over 30 years. However, like any medical procedure, it does come with potential side effects.
Most side effects of an anti-wrinkle brow lift are minor and temporary. They may include:
These side effects typically resolve on their own without the need for additional treatment. If you develop a droopy eyelid, it can take up to six weeks for it to wear off.
An anti-wrinkle brow lift can create a more youthful and alert appearance. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations. The results are subtle and aim to enhance your natural features rather than drastically alter your appearance.
Anti-wrinkle brow lifts can be performed on their own or as part of a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. For example, anti-wrinkle injections work very well in the upper part of the face and around the eyes, where muscle hyperactivity is one of the main causes of ageing below the eyes. However, volume loss is one of the biggest factors, so injectable dermal fillers are a popular combination for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.
Many patients who choose to address the signs of ageing with injectables like anti-wrinkle and dermal fillers will also find it helpful to add in some laser skin rejuvenation treatments like BBL or Halo laser to improve skin quality.
Choosing the right practitioner is a critical step in your anti-wrinkle brow lift journey. Having a detailed understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology means your experienced doctor has an intuitive understanding of how to achieve the best result for you – not just a ‘point and shoot’ or ‘painting by numbers’ approach.

Here`s another fabulous result from our talented surgeon @bramhallplasticsurgery.
This lovely patient had a wide awake deep plane face and neck lift under local anaesthetic. The deep plane technique is the most technically challenging facelift to perform, and Russell remains the only surgeon in Scotland offering it. Unlike more traditional lifts, it goes much deeper to reposition the facial tissues rather than simply pulling them tight.
The outcome is a much more effective rejuvenation and results that last far longer than a standard facelift.
She is nine months post-surgery and absolutely delighted with her results.

We’re saying goodbye to summer, but hello to laser season!
With the shorter days and weaker sunlight, autumn and winter are the most popular times of year for laser treatments. In the clinic we use a spectrum of world-leading technologies, from gentle refreshes right through to the most transformative resurfacing, to help undo sun damage, smooth texture and bring out your best skin.
BBL is our universal refresher — excellent for redness, sun damage and pigmentation, and it leaves skin glowing without any downtime. For patients looking for some more correction, Halo combines two wavelengths to resurface the skin, refine pores and soften fine lines, usually with less than a week of recovery. And when the goal is the most dramatic change, full laser resurfacing delivers a complete reset, tackling the deepest lines and wrinkles and dramatically transforming skin quality.
Here are some of our fabulous patients who have kindly let us share their results. If you’ve been considering laser treatment, now really is the ideal time to start!
Check the link in our bio for more information on our laser treatments.
Thank you so much to our incredible patient for allowing us to share her results with you. The patient was bothered by the appearance of her jowls which were, predominantly, the result of volume loss from the face.
We restored volume in all the key areas of the face to give her a nice, subtle rejuvenation. She is over the moon with her results. What do you think?
I am VERY excited to let you know about the newest recruit to the Dream Team - Dr Kavita Sharma. Kavita is a fully qualified consultant plastic surgeon who specialises in breast reconstruction for cancer patients in the NHS, as well aesthetic surgery of the breast.
She is going to be performing predominantly breast and body surgery with us (including gynaecomastia surgery for men with enlarged chests!). Aside from being a highly technically-skilled plastic surgeon, what is exciting about Kavita is that she is one of the few female plastic surgeons performing aesthetic surgery.
She has an excellent intuitive understanding of aesthetics as well as the needs and wants of aesthetic surgery patients.
I am sure you are all going to love her as much as we do!
One of the most powerful yet subtle procedures we offer is upper blepharoplasty, removing excess skin from the upper eyelids to create a fresher, more open look.
Thank you to this lovely patient for allowing us to share her results with you. This transformation by the ever-talented @bramhallplasticsurgery shows how a carefully performed eyelid lift can restore definition and lightness around the eyes, without changing your natural expression.
If you’d like to find out more about the upper blepharoplasty or find out if you would be a suitable candidate check the link in our bio.
So tonight we have a double whammy post. First, another example of our 5ml protocol.
But of equal excitement level, an introduction to the newest doctor to join the DreamTeam - Dr Sharon, who is performing the procedure! We are very excited for Sharon to come on board.
Let us know what you think in the comments!
I am so excited to let you all know that our precious daughter is about to have a precious little sister!
The pregnancy has been a bit of a challenge, which is why we haven`t said anything about it before now, but we will be finishing up in the next few weeks to head over to America for the birth and we will be away for 6 weeks.
If you are due to see me in that time frame, I`m adding in some extra availability over the next few weeks to try and see you before we go, and our fabulous team will look after you while we`re away!
It’s getting to that time of year again when we start to look at skin quality and undoing the effects of the summer sun. Here’s a patient we treated with laser resurfacing to combat years of sun damage to the skin.
The patient was anxious about having laser, so we gave her some light sedation for the treatment. We added a little filler to the deep folds around the mouth at the same time. She’s four months post-op and loving life.

What’s the difference between a deep plane facelift and a mini facelift? Here’s our facelift expert, @bramhallplasticsurgery talking about the difference. Both procedures start in a similar way, but what happens beneath the skin makes all the difference.
In a deep plane facelift, the deeper tissues are lifted, key ligaments are released, and the entire face is repositioned for a result that’s both effective and natural.
A mini lift, on the other hand, simply tightens the tissues with a few stitches — which can look less natural over time as the skin changes.
At McKeown Medical, we stopped offering mini lifts years ago because the results of a deep plane facelift are just in another league.
