Your Care at McKeown Medical

Meet Your Surgical Team

Breast surgery sits at the centre of Dr Kavita Sharma’s practice, across both aesthetic and reconstructive work. Patients travelling from Edinburgh are examined and advised by her directly at consultation, with her recommendations set out in writing afterwards.

Meet Dr Kavita Sharma

Dr Kavita Sharma (GMC: 7039911) is a Specialist Registered Consultant Plastic Surgeon with expertise in microsurgical and oncoplastic breast reconstruction, trained extensively across leading centres throughout the UK. She combines extensive reconstructive expertise with a meticulous aesthetic approach to breast surgery, helping patients achieve natural, proportionate results.

Breast Uplift at McKeown Medical

A breast uplift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that repositions and reshapes the breast, addressing sagging and restoring a more lifted breast profile. For many patients, particularly after pregnancy or significant weight change, an uplift on its own delivers the result they want. For patients who have also lost breast volume, combining an uplift with augmentation may produce a more balanced and natural result, all achieved in a single procedure. Dr Sharma will guide you to the right approach during consultation. All surgery is performed under deep sedation.

Combining a Breast Uplift with Breast Augmentation

Where volume loss is a significant concern alongside changes in breast position and shape, a breast uplift is often combined with breast augmentation in a single operative episode. This allows Dr Sharma to address both the structural support and the projection of the breast at the same time, avoiding the need for two separate procedures. The approach, implant selection and incision pattern are all determined by your anatomy and discussed fully at consultation.

Benefits of a Breast Uplift

A breast uplift surgery can restore a firmer, more lifted breast profile that sits higher on the chest wall, improving both breast shape and symmetry. Results are long lasting, although the breasts will continue to age naturally over time. Many patients find that clothing fits differently and that they feel more comfortable in their own shape. For the right patient, it is a well-established way to address the changes that pregnancy, weight loss or ageing bring to breast position and shape.

Travelling to the Clinic from Edinburgh

Breast uplift surgery is carried out as a day case, so there is no overnight stay at the clinic. You will need a responsible adult to take you home afterwards and stay with you overnight, and for Edinburgh patients that is the arrangement worth planning first. We are at 167 Bath Street in Glasgow city centre, roughly an hour from Edinburgh by train or via the M8, with Queen Street and Central both a ten-minute walk away. Beyond the surgery itself, you can expect to return for a wound check at one week and reviews with your surgeon at six and twelve weeks.

Your Breast Uplift: What It Treats and How It Works

What a Breast Uplift Treats

Breast uplift surgery is indicated for a specific set of concerns that develop as a result of ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight change. Dr Sharma tailors the procedure to each patient’s anatomy and may address one or more of the following conditions.

Sagging Breasts

As the breast tissue and overlying skin lose elasticity over time, the breast can descend on the chest wall and the nipple can drop below the natural fold, producing a look many patients describe as drooping breasts. Breast uplift surgery directly addresses this by removing excess skin and reshaping and repositioning the breast tissue to restore a firmer, more lifted contour.

Loss of Volume After Pregnancy or Weight Loss

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant weight loss can leave the breast appearing deflated and lacking upper pole fullness, with skin that no longer reflects the volume beneath. Where volume loss is the primary concern, an uplift may be combined with augmentation to restore breast shape and fullness simultaneously, depending on what Dr Sharma determines is most appropriate for your anatomy.

Breast Asymmetry

Many patients seek breast uplift surgery to address differences in the size, shape or breast position of each side. Surgery can be used to create greater symmetry by adjusting one or both breasts, with the final approach tailored to the degree of asymmetry present and the outcome the patient wants to achieve.

How Treatment Works

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Your consultation with Dr Sharma begins with a thorough assessment of your breast anatomy, skin quality, degree of ptosis and overall goals. She will discuss the range of surgical approaches available, set realistic expectations, and confirm whether a standalone breast uplift or a combined procedure with augmentation is the most appropriate option for your individual circumstances.

Step 2: Treatment

Breast uplift surgery is performed under deep sedation at McKeown Medical. Incisions are placed carefully to minimise visible scarring, with the pattern determined by the degree of lift required and Dr Sharma’s assessment of your anatomy. The procedure typically involves reshaping the breast tissue, repositioning the nipple and areola, and removing excess skin to restore a firmer, more lifted breast profile.

Step 3: Recovery & Follow-Up

You will feel stiff and sore in the first few days, and pain relief is provided to manage this. Our practice nurse will call you the day after surgery to check on how you are doing. Swelling and bruising typically peak after a few days before improving over the following couple of weeks. A wound check with the nurse is arranged for a week after surgery.

Step 4: Long-Term Care and Follow-Up

You will see your surgeon for review at six weeks and again at twelve weeks, to confirm that healing has progressed as expected and that you are happy with the outcome. Further follow-up is arranged where it is needed. Results are long lasting, though weight change, future pregnancies and the natural ageing process can all influence how they evolve over time.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a breast uplift and a breast augmentation?

A breast uplift repositions and reshapes the breast to correct sagging and restore breast position. Augmentation adds volume using implants or fat transfer. The two are often combined where both position and volume need to be addressed in a single procedure.

Will I have visible scars after a breast uplift?

Scarring is an expected outcome of any surgical uplift. Incisions are placed to keep scarring as discreet as possible, most commonly around the areola or with a short vertical scar below, and scarring settles with time. Position and extent depend on the degree of lift required.

How long is recovery after a breast uplift?

Swelling and bruising peak in the first few days and improve over the following couple of weeks. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for longer. Dr Sharma will provide specific guidance based on your procedure.

Can I still breastfeed after a breast uplift?

Breast uplift surgery may affect breastfeeding capacity, depending on the technique used. This is an important consideration for patients who plan future pregnancies. Dr Sharma will discuss this in full during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

How long do the results of a breast uplift last?

Results are long lasting, though weight change, future pregnancies and the natural ageing process can influence how outcomes evolve. Many patients enjoy their results for many years with minimal change when weight remains stable.
