Neck Lift Surgery at McKeown Medical

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that addresses loose skin, muscle banding and excess fullness beneath the chin. At McKeown Medical, the neck is corrected as part of the deep plane face and neck lift. The reason is anatomical: the platysma, the submental fat and the transition at the jawline are connected, and treating them together is what produces a consistent contour across the lower face and neck. The procedure releases and repositions the deeper tissues rather than tightening skin, which is what allows the correction to hold. Surgery is performed under deep sedation with local anaesthetic.

Can the Neck Be Improved Without Surgery?

Not every neck requires a neck lift. Where laxity is mild to moderate and the platysma has not significantly slackened, the Quantum Lift offers a minimally invasive alternative. What a Neck Lift Treats

Neck Laxity

Platysmal Banding

The platysma is a broad, flat muscle running down the front of the neck. As it ages, its edges can become visible as vertical bands from the jawline towards the collarbone. A neck lift allows the muscle to be tightened and repaired directly.

Excess Submental Fat

Fullness beneath the chin creates a heavy, indistinct profile between the jaw and neck. This can be addressed as part of a neck lift, or through the precision contouring used in the Quantum Lift where skin laxity is limited and fat is the dominant concern.

Loss of Jawline Definition

Where the neck has lost its angle at the jaw, the cause often sits above it in the lower face. Assessment considers the jawline and neck together, since treating the neck in isolation rarely restores the transition between the two.

How Neck Lift Surgery Works

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Assessment covers skin thickness and quality, the degree of laxity present, whether the platysma has begun to band, and how much support the jawline above is providing. Surgical and non-surgical routes are both considered at this stage rather than assumed at the outset. Where a neck lift is the appropriate option, Mr Bramhall plans the procedure with you and talks through what it involves.

Step 2: Treatment

Neck lift surgery is performed under deep sedation with local anaesthetic. Incisions are placed in natural creases and behind the ears to keep scarring discreet. The procedure typically involves tightening the platysma, repositioning or removing excess skin, and addressing submental fullness where required. Operative time varies with the extent of correction and whether the face is treated at the same time.

Step 3: Recovery & Follow-Up

Most patients need two to three weeks of downtime following surgery. The early part of that period involves rest and gentle movement, with swelling and bruising settling steadily as healing progresses. A follow-up appointment is arranged to review how you are healing, and your post-operative arrangements are confirmed with you in advance so you know what to expect on the day.

Step 4: Long-Term Care and Follow-Up

Results continue to refine after the initial recovery period as the deeper tissues settle into position. The most reliable ways to protect the result are sun protection and maintaining a stable weight. Some patients add skin quality treatments over time to support the appearance of the skin itself, which surgery does not change. Follow-up appointments form part of your ongoing aftercare.
