Your First Dermal Filler Appointment at McKeown Medical: What to Expect

The first half of a dermal filler appointment is spent talking and looking, not treating, and that is where the result is really decided.

Your first dermal filler appointment at McKeown Medical Glasgow begins with a full clinical consultation, not treatment. Dr Darren McKeown will assess your facial anatomy, discuss your goals, agree a treatment plan, and only then proceed with any dermal filler if it is the right approach for you. The full visit typically takes between forty-five minutes and an hour, with treatment, structured photography, and aftercare guidance built into a single calm appointment on Bath Street in central Glasgow.

Before You Arrive

Most patients want to know what to do, and what to avoid, before a first dermal filler appointment. The simplest preparation is the most useful. Arrive with a clean face if you can, or expect to remove makeup at the clinic before assessment and photography. Avoid alcohol for twenty-four hours beforehand and, where medically safe to do so, avoid blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, and high-dose ibuprofen for around forty-eight hours, since these can increase the chance of minor bruising. If you are taking prescribed blood-thinning medication, do not stop it, the clinic will work around it.

Bring a list of any medications you are currently taking, any previous aesthetic treatments you have had including dermal filler placed elsewhere, and a sense of what you are hoping to achieve. You do not need to arrive with a fixed product or technique in mind. The consultation exists to work that out together.

What Happens When You Arrive

You will be welcomed into the clinic on Bath Street, asked to complete a short medical and consent form, and shown into a private treatment room. There is no waiting in shared spaces and no pressure to decide anything before you have spoken to the doctor. The clinic is registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland, and the same clinical environment standards apply to a first appointment as to any other medical consultation.

Dr Darren McKeown personally conducts every dermal filler consultation he treats, rather than handing assessments to a separate consultation team. This matters because the doctor who plans the treatment is the doctor who delivers it. There is no information lost between rooms.

The Consultation

The first half of every appointment is spent talking and looking, not treating. Dr McKeown will take a full medical history, ask about previous aesthetic treatments, and discuss what has prompted you to consider dermal fillers now. He will then examine your face in a structured way, looking at facial proportions, areas of volume loss, the position of the underlying bone and soft tissue, and how your face moves in expression rather than only how it looks at rest.

This part of the appointment is where the treatment plan is actually built. The questions tend to focus on what you have noticed about your face changing, what you would like the result to feel like rather than only how you would like it to look, and whether you have any concerns about previous treatments or specific outcomes you want to avoid. There are no right or wrong answers; the conversation is designed to surface what matters to you, so the plan can be tailored to it.

If a dermal filler is the right approach, Dr McKeown will explain which areas he would recommend treating, which products he would use and why, and what you can realistically expect from the result. If a different treatment would suit you better, or if no treatment is appropriate at this stage, he will say so. Recommending restraint or suggesting an alternative such as skin treatment or anti-wrinkle injections is part of medically led practice.

Stage of the Appointment  What Happens  Approximate Time
Welcome and forms  Medical history, consent paperwork, private treatment room  5 to 10 minutes
Clinical consultation  Facial assessment, discussion of goals, treatment planning  15 to 20 minutes
Photography and consent  Structured clinical photographs, signed treatment consent  5 minutes
Treatment  Dermal filler placement with topical anaesthetic if used  15 to 25 minutes
Aftercare guidance  Written and verbal aftercare instructions, direct contact details  5 minutes

The total visit usually runs between forty-five minutes and one hour, though more comprehensive treatments such as the 5ml Protocol or a planned approach within a Volumetric Facelift framework may take longer.

Photography and Consent

Before any dermal filler is placed, structured clinical photographs are taken from standardised angles in consistent lighting. This is a non-negotiable part of every treatment at McKeown Medical for two reasons. The first is clinical; photography allows accurate before-and-after comparison and supports treatment review at follow-up. The second is medico-legal; full informed consent paired with a documented baseline is a baseline standard of care in aesthetic medicine.

You will then read and sign a treatment consent form covering the agreed plan, the products being used, expected results, possible side effects, and the management protocol if any complication occurs. There is no pressure to sign quickly, and any questions are welcome. A consultation that rushes consent is a consultation that has skipped a step.

The Treatment Itself

Dermal filler treatment is delivered using fine needle or cannula technique depending on the area being treated, with topical anaesthetic applied where appropriate to keep the experience comfortable. The clinic uses topical and local anaesthetic only for dermal filler treatment.

Most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain, with mild discomfort at injection points that settles quickly. Treatment time depends on the areas being addressed, with single-area treatments often completed in fifteen to twenty minutes and more comprehensive plans taking longer. You will be shown the result in a mirror at the end of treatment so you can confirm the outcome before you leave.

Hyaluronidase is kept on site for the immediate management of any vascular complication, which is the standard of safety any patient receiving dermal filler in Glasgow should expect. Dr McKeown is trained in its use under ultrasound guidance.

Aftercare and What to Expect for the Next Few Days

You will leave the clinic with both verbal and written aftercare guidance, plus direct contact details for the clinic if any concern arises afterwards. The most common immediate effects are mild swelling and the possibility of minor bruising at injection points, both of which usually settle within twenty-four to seventy-two hours. The full result of dermal filler treatment is typically visible at around two weeks, once any swelling has fully resolved and the product has integrated with the surrounding tissue.

Standard aftercare advice includes avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol, and very hot environments such as saunas for twenty-four hours after treatment, sleeping on your back if comfortable on the first night, and avoiding heavy makeup directly over treated areas for the same period. Most patients return to work and normal activity the same day or the day after.

A follow-up appointment is offered to review the result at approximately two to four weeks where appropriate, particularly for first treatments or staged plans.

What This Appointment Is Not

A first dermal filler appointment at McKeown Medical is not a sales pitch, a hard close, or a one-size-fits-all consultation. There is no quota to hit and no pressure to commit to treatment on the day if you would rather think about it. If you decide on a different approach that suits you better, or that the timing is not right, the consultation has still done its job. Recommending no treatment, or a less interventional one, is part of medically led practice.

Equally, the appointment is not a casual catch-up. It is a medical consultation governed by the same standards of clinical assessment, documentation, and consent that apply to any other medical procedure. That distinction is the point, and it is worth applying to any clinic you are considering. Our guide on how to choose a dermal filler practitioner sets out the checks and questions that separate a medical consultation from a sales appointment.

What If You Have Had Filler Elsewhere Before

If you have had a previous dermal filler placed at another clinic, bring whatever information you have about the treatment, the product used, the dates, and whether you have had any concerns since. The consultation will start with an assessment of what is currently in your face, which can be helpful in planning any further treatment or, if appropriate, refining or dissolving previous work.

Different products and different placement strategies suit different patients, and a fresh assessment is always the right starting point rather than an assumption about what has gone before. There is no judgement attached to previous treatment, only an interest in working out what is right for the face in front of us now.

A Note on What Comes Next

Choosing the right practitioner is the single most important factor in achieving safe, natural-looking results, and understanding the thinking behind the treatment itself is the natural next step.  What natural-looking dermal fillers actually involve walks through the questions that matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first dermal filler appointment take?

Most first appointments at McKeown Medical Glasgow take between forty-five minutes and one hour, including consultation, photography, treatment, and aftercare guidance. More comprehensive plans can take longer, and you will know roughly how long to allow when you book.

Will I have dermal filler treatment at the first appointment?

Usually yes, if it is the right approach for you and you wish to proceed. The consultation, photography, and treatment can all be completed in a single visit. If a different approach suits you better, or you would prefer to think about treatment before going ahead, that is equally welcomed and there is no pressure to decide on the day.

Does dermal filler treatment hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain. Topical anaesthetic is applied where appropriate to keep the experience comfortable, and any discomfort at injection points settles quickly. The clinic uses topical and local anaesthetic only.

How soon will I see the result of my dermal filler treatment?

The result is visible immediately, but the final settled outcome is typically clearest at around two weeks, once any swelling has resolved and the product has integrated with surrounding tissue. A follow-up appointment is offered where appropriate to review the result and discuss any further treatment.

What if I have a concern after my appointment?

You will leave the clinic with direct contact details for any concern that arises after treatment. McKeown Medical operates a clear aftercare protocol with same-day or next-working-day response to patient concerns, which is the standard of follow-up any patient receiving dermal filler treatment in Glasgow should expect.

McKeown Medical’s Approach to Natural-Looking Dermal Fillers in Glasgow

Natural-looking dermal fillers begin with anatomical assessment rather than product selection, and the difference shows in the result. This is...

Once again, the combination treatment wins the day!

This patient came to us hating her neck and jowls, but she would not consider anything invasive. Treating the neck is always a challenge especially with non-invasive treatments only.

For this patient we first of all reduced the fat under the chin using CoolSculpting, then we did some hyaluronic acid under the mandible to define the jaw and finally we did some Sofwave to tighten the skin.

The patient is over the moon with her results. What do you think?
I genuinely think the Quantum Lift is changing what is possible for patients who want to improve their jawline and neck, but do not want to undergo facelift surgery.

I have used earlier generations of skin-tightening technology and, honestly, I was often underwhelmed by the results. This is different.

By combining precise power-assisted liposuction, targeted treatment of the neck muscle where needed, and QuantumRF skin tightening, we can address the three things that most commonly age the lower face and neck: muscle, fat and skin.

This patient is shown just 24 hours after treatment. There is still swelling to settle, but the early change in her jawline and neck contour is already clear.

I have also included clips from the procedure for anyone who likes seeing the technical side of what we do.

Would you consider a minimally invasive alternative to facelift surgery for your jawline or neck, or would you rather go straight to surgery?
The biggest mistake I see after weight loss? People choose a treatment before understanding what's actually causing their loose skin.

Not all "loose skin" is the same, which is why the right treatment for one person can be completely wrong for another.

If you've lost weight and aren't sure which option is right for you, the first step isn't choosing a device. It's getting the right diagnosis.

The SMAS Facelift is back at McKeown Medical!

Patients tell us all the time that they want to get rid of their jowls and facial sagging, but are hesitant about a lengthy surgical procedure or taking several weeks away from work and social commitments. The SMAS Facelift is an excellent alternative for patients who want meaningful improvement without the bigger commitment.

It's a technique that lifts and repositions the deeper tissues of the face while removing excess skin. Until Deep Plane became more popular in the last 10 years, SMAS was the gold standard. Compared with Deep Plane, it takes about 3 hours instead of 6-8, can be done under local anaesthetic, has a shorter recovery, and lower risk of nerve injury. For many patients with moderate facial ageing, it produces excellent, long-lasting results at £12,000, all performed by the phenomenal @bramhallplasticsurgery.

This is one of our patients who had a SMAS Facelift with eyelid surgery five years ago. She's maintained her results with HA fillers, like many of our surgical patients do, but otherwise her results are still going strong. That's what SMAS can give you.

Every face ages differently and every patient has different circumstances. Some need the extensive correction of Deep Plane, especially if they have a heavy neck. Others are better suited to SMAS, particularly if you want a less invasive option with quicker recovery.

The right choice depends on your anatomy, your concerns, and your lifestyle. If you’d like to know more about the SMAS facelift, drop your questions in the comments or send us a DM!
