Acne scars can feel like a stubborn reminder of a skin condition you’ve long since left behind, and one that was pretty unpleasant, we’d all rather forget. Even when your breakouts are under control, pitted marks, uneven texture, and pigmentation can affect how you feel about your skin, and, in turn, your confidence.

While no treatment can completely erase acne scars, the right approach can make a dramatic difference to skin texture, tone, and overall smoothness. Two of the most popular treatments for acne scarring are microneedling and laser resurfacing, but which is more effective for you?

Both Microneedling and Laser Resurfacing are designed to stimulate collagen and improve long-term skin quality, but they work in different ways and suit different scar types. Understanding how Microneedling compares to Laser Resurfacing is key to choosing the most effective treatment plan.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

Microneedling works by creating thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin using fine needles. This stimulates your body’s natural wound-healing process, triggering the production of collagen and elastin, the key building blocks of healthy, smooth skin.

Microneedling is often chosen by patients looking for gradual improvement with minimal disruption to daily life. While Microneedling can significantly improve mild to moderate acne scarring, it may not deliver the same level of correction as advanced Laser Resurfacing for deeper or more complex scars.

It can be effective for superficial textural irregularities and newer scars, and can be used on most skin tones with minimal downtime.

Pros of Microneedling:

  • Stimulates natural collagen production
  • Minimal downtime compared to aggressive resurfacing
  • Can be repeated at intervals for progressive improvement

Cons of Microneedling:

  • Less effective for deep or severe scars
  • Multiple sessions needed for best results
  • Results develop gradually over several months

For patients with more established or severe scarring, Laser Resurfacing may offer more dramatic structural improvement than Microneedling alone. In some cases, Microneedling can be used as part of a staged treatment plan alongside Laser Resurfacing to maximise results.

What Is Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing uses concentrated light energy to remove damaged layers of skin and remodel collagen beneath the surface. It can treat a wide variety of acne scars, but is particularly effective for more significant scar types and complex mixed patterns that involve both texture and pigmentation.

Laser Resurfacing works by delivering controlled thermal energy into the skin, which can remodel deeper scar tissue more aggressively than Microneedling. This makes Laser Resurfacing particularly effective for atrophic, boxcar, and rolling scars that require more intensive collagen remodelling.

At McKeown Medical, we offer a full suite of advanced laser technologies so we can match the treatment to your exact skin concerns:

  • Full Laser Resurfacing – Comprehensive resurfacing for significant texture changes and deep scars.
  • ProFractional Laser – Targets only a fraction of the skin surface at a time, reducing downtime while stimulating deep collagen renewal.
  • HALO – Combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths for a balance of resurfacing and minimal recovery.
  • BBL® – Uses broadband light to target pigmentation and redness often left behind by acne.

Pros of Laser Resurfacing:

  • Can significantly improve deep and complex scars
  • Precise targeting of different scars
  • Provides heat as well as mechanical injury, which is more effective in stimulating collagen
  • Fewer sessions are needed compared to microneedling
  • Can also improve pigmentation and overall skin tone

Compared to Microneedling, Laser Resurfacing typically requires fewer sessions to achieve visible improvement, although downtime can be slightly longer depending on the technology used. The choice between Microneedling and Laser Resurfacing ultimately depends on scar depth, skin type, and your tolerance for recovery time.

Cons of Laser Resurfacing:

  • More downtime than microneedling (varies by treatment type)
  • Higher upfront cost per session
  • Not always suitable for very dark skin tones, requires expert assessment

The Right Treatment for You

Acne scars are as individual as fingerprints; no two people have the same pattern, depth, or distribution. For that reason, there is no universal “best” treatment.

During consultation, we assess whether Microneedling, Laser Resurfacing, or a combination of both will provide the most predictable improvement for your specific acne scar pattern. Often, combining targeted Laser Resurfacing with adjunct Microneedling can optimise collagen stimulation at multiple skin depths.

In many cases, combining different laser resurfacing techniques delivers the best results: different laser types can often be combined in the same session to deliver maximum results.

Our approach at McKeown Medical is to assess your skin in detail, discuss your priorities, and create a personalised treatment plan that addresses both the physical scarring and your concerns about downtime, cost, and results.

The biggest mistake I see after weight loss? People choose a treatment before understanding what's actually causing their loose skin.

Not all "loose skin" is the same, which is why the right treatment for one person can be completely wrong for another.

If you've lost weight and aren't sure which option is right for you, the first step isn't choosing a device. It's getting the right diagnosis.

The SMAS Facelift is back at McKeown Medical!

Patients tell us all the time that they want to get rid of their jowls and facial sagging, but are hesitant about a lengthy surgical procedure or taking several weeks away from work and social commitments. The SMAS Facelift is an excellent alternative for patients who want meaningful improvement without the bigger commitment.

It's a technique that lifts and repositions the deeper tissues of the face while removing excess skin. Until Deep Plane became more popular in the last 10 years, SMAS was the gold standard. Compared with Deep Plane, it takes about 3 hours instead of 6-8, can be done under local anaesthetic, has a shorter recovery, and lower risk of nerve injury. For many patients with moderate facial ageing, it produces excellent, long-lasting results at £12,000, all performed by the phenomenal @bramhallplasticsurgery.

This is one of our patients who had a SMAS Facelift with eyelid surgery five years ago. She's maintained her results with HA fillers, like many of our surgical patients do, but otherwise her results are still going strong. That's what SMAS can give you.

Every face ages differently and every patient has different circumstances. Some need the extensive correction of Deep Plane, especially if they have a heavy neck. Others are better suited to SMAS, particularly if you want a less invasive option with quicker recovery.

The right choice depends on your anatomy, your concerns, and your lifestyle. If you’d like to know more about the SMAS facelift, drop your questions in the comments or send us a DM!
Yesterday was a big day in the clinic! We officially launched the game changing Quantum RF technology in the clinic. Quantum allows us to take liposuction to another level. We’ve got power assisted lipo which allows us to sculpt more, we’ve got ultrasound assisted lipo which allows us to melt the fat for more gentle removal. Now we’ve got quantum that allows us to follow this up with a treatment to shrink the skin down. It means patients who may previously have needed excisional surgery - like tummy tuck, or arm lift or thigh lift or even facelift - can be successfully treated without long scars. This is truly game changing technology and we are so excited to be the first in Scotland to introduce it. Can you guess who our first patient was? 👀
