Ozempic and other similar types of medication, like Mounjaro, have gained popularity as effective medications for weight loss, often helping individuals achieve their desired weight goals rapidly. However, a noticeable side effect termed “Ozempic face” has become increasingly common. Understanding this condition can help you effectively manage and reverse its visible signs.

What is Ozempic face and what causes it?

‘Ozempic face’ refers to the noticeable facial changes resulting from rapid weight loss, typically involving loss of volume and elasticity in facial skin. As weight decreases quickly, the face can lose supportive fat, leading to sagging skin, sunken cheeks, increased wrinkles, and an overall prematurely aged appearance. This condition became widely recognised due to its association with individuals using weight-loss medications such as Ozempic.

Can Ozempic face improve naturally over time?

Unfortunately, once facial volume is lost due to rapid weight loss, natural recovery is limited unless weight is regained, which typically isn’t a desired option. Even with weight regain, it is common to regain the fat in other areas of the body, like the hips and thighs, but it is unusual to regain the volume in the areas of the face where it is desirable. However, several treatments can effectively restore lost volume, reduce wrinkles, and rejuvenate your appearance:

  • Non-invasive procedures: Skin-tightening treatments and radiofrequency therapies can help improve skin elasticity.
  • Injectables: Dermal fillers are the mainstay of volume restoration in our practice. The reason we favour them is that they are minimally invasive, long-lasting and low risk, particularly compared with alternatives such as fat transfer and facial implants.
  • Facelift surgery: Provides a comprehensive and long-lasting solution to sagging skin and severe volume loss.

Facelift – the key to reversing Ozempic face

Facelifts offer a highly effective solution for reversing the signs of ageing caused by rapid weight loss. A facelift works by lifting and repositioning underlying facial tissues and skin, restoring youthful firmness and smoothing wrinkles. At McKeown Medical, we provide various facelift options tailored to meet your specific needs:

  • Non-Surgical Facelift: Ideal for mild volume loss, offering rejuvenation with minimal downtime. As well as restoring volume in the face, in the non-surgical facelift, we combine this with laser treatment to improve the texture of the skin and reduce the signs of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Volumetric Facelift: Targets deeper volume loss, restoring youthful fullness naturally across the entire face. This is often our first step for patients who have significant facial volume loss.
  • Deep Plane Face & Neck Lift: Addresses more extensive sagging by repositioning deeper facial layers, resulting in a naturally refreshed appearance. This is especially effective for sagging in the cheeks, jawline and neck.
  • Full Facelift: Comprehensive facial rejuvenation that corrects extensive signs of ageing and sagging by combining the deep plane face and neck lift with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or laser resurfacing.

If you are due to see me in that time frame, I'm adding in some extra availability over the next few weeks to try and see you before we go, and our fabulous team will look after you while we're away!
What’s the difference between a deep plane facelift and a mini facelift? Here’s our facelift expert, @bramhallplasticsurgery talking about the difference. Both procedures start in a similar way, but what happens beneath the skin makes all the difference.

In a deep plane facelift, the deeper tissues are lifted, key ligaments are released, and the entire face is repositioned for a result that’s both effective and natural.

A mini lift, on the other hand, simply tightens the tissues with a few stitches — which can look less natural over time as the skin changes.

At McKeown Medical, we stopped offering mini lifts years ago because the results of a deep plane facelift are just in another league.

Jowls are one of the most common complaints that our patients come with - and so many of you want to avoid surgery, for a variety of very personal reasons.

So just what can we do for jowls without surgery? This!!!

Thank you so much to this patient for allowing us to share the results of her volumetric facelift. The volumetric facelift involves restoring volume to areas of the face that have lost volume as part of the ageing process - typically the cheeks, chin and jawline - which can really help to rejuvenate the face, especially reducing the appearance of jowls.

The patient is over the moon with this result. What do you think?
Varicose veins and thread veins might sound similar, but they’re actually quite different. Here's Dr Alex, our vascular surgeon explaining the difference.

Varicose veins are larger, swollen veins that sit just beneath the surface of the skin. They often appear on the legs or feet and can cause discomfort, pain or a heavy, aching sensation.

Thread veins, sometimes called spider veins, are much smaller. They appear as red, blue or purple web-like lines on the surface of the skin and are usually painless. You’ll often see them on the legs or face.

We can treat both types of veins. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, get in touch and we’ll be happy to talk it through.
