Nose

For some, a strong nose is perceived as a sign of strength of character; for others, it can be perceived as unsightly and become a source of embarrassment. However, the nose is also the most central feature on the face – so ensuring a harmonious appearance is key.

The nose over time

Most of us are born with a small, petite nose – but around the time of puberty, when the bones of the body grow rapidly, so too do the cartilages and bones of the nose. Occasionally, particular cartilages or bones develop more than others – resulting in a bump or a prominent nose that can feel unbalanced within the facial structure.

Modern surgical techniques

Historically, the approach to a Rhinoplasty (a surgical procedure to reshape the nose) has been to reduce the size of the nose by removing bone and cartilage. However, when too much bone or cartilage is removed, it can impair the everyday function and breathing mechanisms of the nose, and may lead to longer-term complications, such as a risk of collapse. As a result, the trend over the last couple of decades has steered away from removing bone or cartilage, and more towards preserving the structure of the nose: often adding cartilage grafts to build up deficient areas of the nasal anatomy, to create a more balanced profile.
