For many, a sagging neck is an inevitability. This is because the skin on the neck is some of the thinnest on the entire body, with less sebaceous glands than the face; while excessive movement – for example, looking down at digital devices, can often result in the dreaded “tech neck”. A sagging neck can appear even more noticeable
in those patients who have maintained a good quality skin and facial scaffolding through topical ingredients, injectables and energy-based devices – making the concern even more pronounced. In all cases, it is critical to determine the root cause of a sagging neck, in order to prescribe the adequate treatment.
Sagging Neck Treatments
NON-SURGICAL
TREATMENTS
What can help?
There are several solutions to improving a sagging neck – including both non-surgical and surgical options. If a non-surgical option is preferred, we can use Botox® to relax the rope-like platysmal bands of the neck, which can soften a “stringy” appearance and even promote a subtle elevation of the neck and lower-face. Skin boosters such as Profhilo are also a great option when we are looking to improve the texture of the skin; while energy-based devices such as Morpheus8 can be beneficial for minor skin tightening. If the patient is looking for more noticeable results and longevity of treatment, the gold-standard surgical approach is the Lower Face and Neck Lift.

QUESTIONS
Botox® does not require the use of anaesthetic – although for very sensitive areas, a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand. Skinboosters such as Profhilo do not contain anaesthetic such as lidocaine, and can therefore sting when initially administered – however this quickly subsides. With Morpheus8, we apply a topical numbing cream to ensure the skin is desensitised before treatment. The Lower Face and Neck Lift is performed under local anaesthetic – which means that you are awake throughout the procedure – avoiding the complications related to anaesthetic, while enhancing recovery.
By improving the underlying structures of the neck, and addressing the suboptimal soft tissues, we are able to effectively correct the appearance of a sagging neck, while also reinstating a smoother-looking canvas. However, while we can address a sagging neck via both surgical and non-surgical options, it must be noted that the results of non-surgical treatments in the neck are more modest when compared with their effectiveness on the face.
There is little to no downtime with Botox®. With Profhilo, you’ll notice small “bee-sting” welts in the injection sites, which should settle by the end of the day. With Morpheus8, the treated area feels flushed and fiery; however, this should subside within 24 hours. With a Lower Face and Neck Lift, most patients require a couple of weeks off work following the procedure – to allow the immediate signs of surgery to settle.
The results of Botox® take up to one week to become apparent, with effects typically lasting between three to six months, before a repeat treatment is required. Following Profhilo, the neck appears smoother with “necklace lines” notably softened. Best results from Morpheus8 are seen after three months, when fresh new collagen and elastin has helped to plump the skin and restore lost spring. The most dramatic results, however, are to be seen with the Lower Face and Neck Lift – though it is worth noting that the scars from the surgery can take a year or more to fully settle.
