Chin augmentation with filler injection

A strong, well defined chin is a key component of a normal, healthy facial profile.

A deficiency of projection at the chin – known medically as microgenia – can cause be perceived as a sign of weakness and can be a source of embarrassment for some patients. This can often be improved by injection of filler materials at the chin.

As we age, the lower jaw shrinks and we lose projection and definition of the chin. As a result of the jaw bone becoming smaller, the overlying soft tissues have less structure and support and so the skin appears loose and saggy. Restoring volume to the chin can have a significant impact on the facial proportions, improving the facial contours as well as on reducing lose and lax skin that are the result of the deficient bone structure.
Both men and women are suitable for this procedure. They typically fall in to two groups: the first group is a typically younger group who have a congenitally small chin and the second group is an older group who have lost volume with age. In the younger group who have have congenitally small chin this simply means that the chin they were born with is too small for their face, leading to a disproportionate appearance. Volume can be added to either increase the projection of the chin or to make the chin vertically longer. Often, a combination of these is required to achieve the optimal facial proportions.

How is the procedure carried out?

The procedure is usually carried out using a micro-cannula injection technique.

This means that a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected along the jawline before a cannula is inserted and the filler material is deposited (usually on top of the bone). There is very little pain or discomfort associated with the procedure, which is usually complete in under 15 minutes. Afterwards there will be some mild redness and swelling, although most people can resume normal activities immediately. The results typically last for a year or more.
