How Does It Work?

Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Correction Surgery)

Otoplasty, or prominent ear correction surgery, is a highly effective procedure that repositions and reshapes the ears to create a more natural, balanced appearance. Prominent or protruding ears can cause self-consciousness at any age, but a simple correction can significantly improve facial harmony and boost confidence.

At McKeown, our consultant plastic surgeons take a careful, artistic approach to otoplasty, tailoring each procedure to your facial structure for subtle, natural-looking results.

Otoplasty is performed under local anaesthetic only, with minimal downtime and a rapid return to normal activities.

Benefits of Otoplasty Surgery

Otoplasty can make a significant aesthetic and psychological difference:

  • Corrects prominent or protruding ears
  • Repositions the ears closer to the head for a more balanced look
  • Restores natural ear shape and symmetry
  • Boosts self-confidence and reduces self-consciousness
  • Achieves long-lasting, natural-looking results

Otoplasty at McKeown is performed under local anaesthetic only, so you will be awake and comfortable throughout.

An incision is made behind the ear, where the scar will be naturally hidden. The cartilage is then reshaped and repositioned closer to the head. There are a number of ways this can be done including removing some cartilage, re-shaping the cartilage or stitching the cartilage to make the ear sit closer to the face. When the surgeon is happy with the contour of the ear, they will then use fine stitches to close the wound and apply a compression bandage to help keep the ears in the new position as they heal. This is typically removed after one week.

Once healed, the ears appear more naturally proportioned without looking over-corrected or “pinned back.”

Most patients are able to return to work within a week, although strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks to protect your results.

What to Expect

Risks of Otoplasty Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, otoplasty carries some risks. At McKeown, your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities.

Possible risks include:

  • Bruising and Swelling:This is common and to be expected. Most bruising and swelling settle within a few weeks, although subtle changes may continue to refine over several months.
  • Infection:This is uncommon. You will be prescribed antibiotics to help support your healing journey.
  • Scarring:The incision is placed behind the ear and typically heals very well, becoming barely noticeable over time.
  • Asymmetry:Small natural differences between ears may remain after surgery.
  • Numbness:Temporary numbness around the ears is common and usually resolves with time.
  • Overcorrection or Under correction:Rarely, further adjustment or revision surgery may be required.
  • Unsatisfactory Results:In rare cases, a revision procedure may be necessary to refine the outcome.

All potential risks will be fully discussed with you at your consultation.

Common Questions

How long do the results of otoplasty last?

Otoplasty results are permanent. Once the cartilage has healed in its new position, the ears typically maintain their improved shape for life.

Will I have visible scars after otoplasty?

No. The incision is made behind the ear, where it is naturally hidden in the crease and becomes barely noticeable once healed.

What is the recovery like after prominent ear correction?

You can expect mild swelling, bruising, and some tightness around the ears for the first week. A supportive headband may be worn, particularly at night, to protect the ears as they heal. Most patients return to work within 5–7 days.

Does otoplasty hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Some mild discomfort or tightness afterward is normal and usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Am I suitable for otoplasty?

Good candidates are healthy individuals who wish to correct the position or shape of prominent ears. Your suitability will be fully assessed during your consultation.
