Gynaecomastia surgery, also known as male chest reduction, is a relatively straightforward and effective procedure to remove excess breast tissue and fat from the male chest. Gynaecomastia — the development of enlarged male breasts — is common and can cause physical discomfort as well as emotional distress.
At McKeown Medical, our gynaecomastia surgery is performed by an expert plastic surgeon who specialises in breast tissue work in the NHS. She uses a combination of techniques to carefully sculpt a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest contour, tailored to each patient’s needs.
Gynaecomastia surgery can deliver life-changing benefits:
At McKeown, gynaecomastia surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic only, ensuring you are awake and comfortable throughout. If you would prefer to sleep during your surgery, however, a consultant anaesthetist can provide deep sleep sedation, meaning you are not aware of what happened during your procedure.
We offer two approaches, depending on the degree of excess tissue:
Standard Gynaecomastia Surgery (Liposuction + Gland Removal):
First we use liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue from the chest area. A small U-shaped incision is then made along the lower edge of the nipple and glandular tissue is surgically excised for a flatter chest.
Gynaecomastia Surgery with Skin Excision:
If there is a lot of excess skin, then in addition to the standard procedure, a circular incision is made around the entire nipple (areola). This allows removal of both the glandular tissue and redundant skin, tightening the chest contour.
Fine dissolvable stitches are used for closure, and scars are placed as discreetly as possible.
Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 7–10 days. Wearing a supportive compression garment helps achieve the best results during healing.

As with any surgical procedure, gynaecomastia surgery carries some risks. At McKeown, we take every precaution to support your healing and ensure a safe, smooth recovery.
Possible risks include:
All potential risks will be fully discussed with you during your consultation with our expert consultant plastic surgeon.
At McKeown, we offer expert care and tailored treatment to help you achieve natural, lasting results.
Here’s why patients choose McKeown:
The results are typically permanent, especially if combined with a healthy lifestyle. Significant weight gain or hormonal changes can affect the long-term result.
Scars are placed carefully around the nipple or areola and are typically discreet. Over time, they fade and become much less noticeable.
You can expect mild swelling, bruising, and tightness for the first 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days. A compression garment should be worn as directed to help shape and support the chest.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Some mild discomfort or tightness afterward is normal and usually well controlled with simple pain relief.
Yes. Some patients choose to combine male chest reduction with abdominal liposuction or other body contouring procedures.
Good candidates are healthy individuals with excess breast tissue, fat, or skin who are looking for a permanent reduction and improved chest contour. Your suitability will be fully assessed during your consultation.
