MARIONETTE
LINES
As ageing starts to manifest, mouth-to-chin lines can become a predominant concern. Otherwise known as “marionette” lines, for their resemblance to the split jaws of string puppets, they run vertically, from the corners of the lips down to either side of the chin, and can give the face a sad or angry appearance. Unlike forehead lines, frown lines or crow’s feet, these lines are not the result of excessive facial movement – they are the result of insufficient volume and support in the lower-face. Much like nose-to-mouth lines, treating mouth-to-chin lines often requires careful assessment of the rest of the face.

NON-SURGICAL
TREATMENTS
What can help?
Dermal filler is the swiftest route to softening the appearance of mouth-to-chin lines. The most sophisticated technique involves not “filling” the lines – but addressing the areas which have started to deteriorate, and that are contributing to the folds of skin. Rather than treating the lines in isolation, it is best to treat the area around the mouth as a single unit in order to achieve a natural and effective result.

COMMON
QUESTIONS
We use dermal fillers which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort – while use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for patients who are anxious.
All of our advanced doctors have been trained to analyse the face carefully. This means that they can pinpoint the exact areas of the face that need support, and consequently lessen the appearance of mouth-to-chin lines. Replacing lost volume in the jawline, for example where bone and soft tissue has deteriorated, means that they can subtly shape the lower face: restoring a sense of strength while softening deep mouth-to-chin lines. The effects of volume restoration typically last 12 – 18 months.
The jawline area can be prone to swelling, and post-procedure, the area will feel sore – however this has usually settled by the next day. Most patients who have dermal filler are back to their normal routine immediately after treatment. If bruising does occur, it is easily covered with post-procedure makeup – though this should not be applied until the following day. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.
Mouth-to-chin lines are smoothed immediately, the jawline looks more refined and even the face looks happier. The best results, however, are seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissues and the face has settled.

Treatment of Lines Around the Lips with Injectables
Lines around the lips are one of the most common complaints that women come to us with. These can be treated permanently with aggressive resurfacing, although a much less invasive option is to simply restore some volume around the area. Hear how Catherine got on with filler injections around the mouth.
