CHIN
The importance of the chin is often under-appreciated: in fact, for many patients, it is inconsequential in comparison to other features – such as the nose or lips. However, the shape and position of the chin is critical in establishing a sense of harmony within the landscape of the face. By correcting the chin we can not only prevent the signs of ageing – but we can restore strength, balance the features, and support the lower-face.

TREATMENTS
What can help?
As we age, bone loss occurs from the mandible or lower-jaw – and if the chin was weak to begin with, then the face is often predisposed to early jowl formation. For this reason, correcting deficiency in the chin is essential: both from the perspective of the facial proportions, but also from the perspective of treating jowls. Dermal fillers are the mainstay of augmenting the chin and are performed by all of our non-surgical doctors: including Dr Darren Mckeown, Dr Nina Singh and Dr Rhona Cameron.

COMMON
QUESTIONS
We use dermal fillers which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort – while use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for patients who are anxious.
Chin augmentation enables us to finesse the lower-face – though it can also be combined with treatment in the cheek. This enables us to replace lost volume from the cheekbone and the lateral cheek – thus supporting the soft tissues reducing the effect of jowling. However, treating the chin can also be of enormous benefit when the nose is noticeably large or out of balance. In fact, by building up a weakened chin, we can restore the natural proportions of the face – and even help the nose to appear smaller. If the nose is still obtrusive following chin augmentation, a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty will help it to integrate more seamlessly into the facial features.
The chin is prone to swelling after dermal fillers, and will feel tender post-procedure – though this has usually settled by the following day. Most patients are ready to resume their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. If bruising occurs, it can be easily covered with post-procedure makeup – though this should not be applied until the next day. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.
The results of dermal fillers are instantaneous, and the chin is immediately more shapely and better supported. However, best results are to be seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has fully integrated with the tissues and the face has settled.
