Pigmentation Removal

We offer pigmentation removal treatment from our clinic in Glasgow.

Skin pigmentation such as freckles or age spots can have a negative impact on the appearance of our skin complexion and tone. Thankfully they can be effectively removed using the latest laser and IPL technology.

How do IPL machines work?

IPL works by releasing a small, sharp bust of filtered light that is absorbed by the high concentration of the melanin found in patches of uneven pigmentation such as freckles, sun spots, age spots or ‘liver spots’. IPL is the same technology used for laser hair removal.

The rapid absorption of the light results in the generation of heat which in turn destroys the cells which cause the pigmentation.

How is the treatment carried out?

A layer of gel is applied to the skin. The laser hand piece is then applied to the skin and a short burst of light is released.

The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and so forth until the entire area has been treated. During the treatment you will need to wear protective eye wear to prevent any damage to your eyes.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Most people are suitable for treatment except those who have very dark skin or have a current sun tan.

Large dark moles that could have a more serious diagnosis should not be treated with laser as well as any moles that cover a large surface area of the body. This treatment is therefore ideal for smaller patches of pigmentation.

How does the treatment feel?

Most patients describe the treatment as being mildly uncomfortable, similar to the flick of an elastic band. During the procedure we use a skin-cooling machine that should relieve any discomfort.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Following the treatment the skin will feel warm and may look red. The lesion will gradually get darker and look more obvious after the first few days of treatment before fading and then flaking away.

How long does each treatment take?

Each treatment will take 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the number and size of patches of pigmentation that require treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments required varies depending on the lesion, but typically 1 to 3 treatments are required spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

I published my first paper in a medical journal, the British Journal of Cancer, in 2004 whilst I was still in my final year of medical school. Since then I have continued to work on aesthetic medical research.
