We offer Facial fat grafting from our clinics in London and Glasgow.
Facial fat grafting uses fat from elsewhere on the body to restore pockets of volume loss on the face. It is ideal for people who need a lot of volume restoration as well as people who do not want to undergo repeat injections of temporary fillers like hyaluronic acid. Unlike temporary fillers, the augmentation provided by fat grafting is permanent. It is however a more invasive procedure, with ‘down time’ afterwards.
How does the procedure work?
The procedure begins by harvesting fat from a pocket of excess (usually the tummy, love handles or – if you are in short supply – sometimes even the knee). This is done under local anaesthetic. The fat that is removed is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the fat cells from the blood and other body fluids, before being injected back into the face. Fat can be used to augment almost any area on the face, although it is most commonly used in the cheeks, lips, jawline, temples and under eye area.
The fat cells are injected using a technique that encourages them to take up a new blood supply in the face. Not all fat cells however will achieve this and approximately 20-40% of the transferred cells are expected to be lost during the first couple of months after the procedure. Because of this expected loss of fat cells it is necessary to over-correct initially, meaning that the initial result will often look like an exaggerated version of the final result.
