Fat Freezing is one of the most significant advances in the field of non-surgical spot fat reduction. The treatment takes advantage of the fact that fat cells are unable to withstand very low temperatures, a concept that was first conceived following an article in the New England Journal of Medicine that observed children who sucked on ice lollies developed dimples in their cheeks. Doctors realised that the dimples were being created because of the cold temperature of the ice lolly was causing the fat cells to die off, which led to an interest in using very cold conditions to reduce fat.

How does the treatment work?

During the treatment a machine is applied to the skin. The machine sucks the skin and fat into a chamber where the tissues are cooled down to -10 degrees and kept at that temperature for up to an hour. At these very cold temperatures the skin cells are able to survive, but fat cells cannot and so the fat cells are entered into a process known as apoptosis – or programmed cell death.

Over the next 2-3 months the fat cells are broken down and naturally eliminated form the body through the urinary system. The machine manufacturers data suggests that on average 26% of fat cells will be lost from just one single treatment session resulting in visible spot fat reduction.
